Isadora Duncan
Isadora Duncan was born May 26th 1877, although it is said she was born on the same date of the year 1878. She started teaching movement when she was 6 and by the time she was 10 her clases grew large. She opened schools that integrated dance with other types of learning. Loie Fuller
She started experimenting with the effects of gs lighting on her silk costume. She developed a natural movement with improvisation techniques that connected to her silk costume and lighting experiment. She also was the first to develop chemical mixes as gels and slides for lighting. -
Doris Humphrey
Known for her fall and recovery technique. She studied at the Denisshawn school in LA. She formed the Humphrey-Weidman studio and company in New York. -

First Dance Major Program
John Dewey and the Columbia Unversity Teachers College teaching method of " learning by doing" attracted people which led to physical education students at Columbia University Teachers College to study dance.

Hanya Holm
rising antifascist sentiment was renamed to Hanya Holm School of Dance. Was a chief instructor at Mary Wigman's school. She used space and improvisation in her choreography.Used dramatic and choreographic fusion. -
Alvin Ailey
Founded Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Created many Modern Dance Classics that are well known today. His best work drew and African-American traditions and subject matters. -
Merce Cunningham
Been a a huge part of Modern Dance since the 1960's. Attended many school including the school of American Ballet. He dance with Martha Graham from 1939-1945. Started presenting his own choreography in the 1940's. I n1953 he formed the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Used Music, design, and dance. -

Creative and Aesthetic aspects of Dance Education
University dance programs shifted from physical education to arts affiliated. This led to a creative and aesthetic approach to the aspects of dance education. Also affected by the IX which is part of the ESEA.

Dance Boom

Dance education Expanding
In the last half of the twentieth century dance was placed beyond the universitiy level program and made it's way to K-12 education. It also created more advanced levels at the university stage.

Creative Dance Center
Artisitc Director Anne Green Gilbert founded the Creative Dance Center. She wanted to create a school that helped children develop dancer technique and skills, and the creative possibilities. The first location was in Russia. They have a structured lesson plan that allows the children to be brain ready, and willing to learn. -
Modern Dance
During the turn of the twentieth century Modern dance was born when dancers and choreographers rebelled against the two forms of dance that were followed at the time, these being ballet and vaudeville. These artisits wanted to be taken seriously not just as entertainers. -
