    Issued on January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation transformed the character of the Civil War by making the destruction of slavery an object of the Union war effort. It also authorized the enlistment of African Americans in the Union armed forces. By placing slavery on the road to complete abolition, it made a postwar reconstruction of southern society inevitable.
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    Lincoln is assassinated at Fords Theater. His killer is named John Wilkes Booth (one of the actors on stage) Andrew Johnson now becomes President.

  • Ku Klux Klan

    Ku Klux Klan
    A secret organization to intimidate African Americans and restore white rule is founded in Pulaski, Tennessee.

    Members of the Ku Klux Klan disguised themselves in hooded robes while committing criminal acts against Southern blacks and their Republican allies. Hooded horses added another element of terror. This klansman holds a banner embellished with a dragon motif and a Latin motto.

  • First Black Senator

    First Black Senator
    Hiram Revels of Mississippi elected to U. S. Senate as the first black senator

    During the Civil War, he served as chaplain for a black regiment. Revels came to Mississippi in 1865 and became involved in the movement to establish schools for the former slaves. After being elected to the state Senate in 1869, Revels was chosen by the legislature to fill Mississippi's unexpired term in the U. S. Senate, serving from February 1870 to March 1871.
