Road to the Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
This compromise declared that the 36-60 line allowed freedom above it, and slavery below it.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
This compromise admitted California as a free state, and organized the territory gained from the Mexican Cession through popular sovereignty.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
The fugitive slave act stated that it is a federal crime to help runaway slaves, and those who did would be fined $1,000 and jailed for 6 months per slave helped.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, this fictional novel revealed the horrific realities of being a slave. Copies sold in that year are only second to the Bible.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act
This split the Louisiana Territory into two territories: Kansas and Nebraska. They decided whether to be slave or free using popular sovereignty. This also caused Bloody/Bleeding Kansas
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
John Brown and his sons were part of the Bleeding Kansas massacres, they killed 5 men by beheading them, and planned to start a slave rebellion. One day they decided to take over the settlement of Harper's Ferry, but no slaves showed up and he was hung for treason while being hailed a hero by the north, and appalling the south.
  • Dredd Scott Case

    Dredd Scott Case
Slaves cannot sue as they are property, and denying the right to take your property anywhere is an encroachment on your rights. By the court ruling, slavery is now allowed everywhere.
  • Abraham Lincoln's Election

    Abraham Lincoln's Election
Abraham Lincoln's election caused the southern states to secede and began the Civil War, and it is also considered(by me at least) to be the biggest Cause of the Civil War.
