The Indian Removal Act
The Indian Removal Act was signed into law by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830. It authorized the president to grant lands west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian lands in existing state borders. -
Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears was the forced displacement of around 60,000 people of the 5 civilized tribes. They were relocated to an area known as Indian Territory. -
Civil War
The Civil War was a heavily and deadly dispute between the Union and the Confederates, the heavy dispute was because of slavery. Most of the tribes supported the Confederates and after the war their land was broken up into smaller units. -
Reconstruction Treaties
The Southern Treaty Commission was created by Congress to write new Treaties with the Tribes that sided with the Confederacy. This led the land of the natives to be broken up into smaller pieces. -
Dawes Act
The Dawes Act regulated land rights on tribal territories within the United States. It authorized the President to break up reservation land. -
Oklahoma Land Rush
The Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889 was the first land run into the Unassigned Lands of former Indian Territory. It was a lot of chaos and a lot of confusion, men and women rushed to claim land and purchase lots. -
The Indian Reorganization Act
The Indian Reorganization Act aimed at decreasing federal control of American Indian affairs. It granted a new degree of autonomy to Native Americans in the United States.
