  • Prohibition

    Prohibition
    Prohibition was a law to ban all the importing, exporting and consumption of alcohol. The purpose of this ban was to stop alcohol consumption, however many people hated it. This caused a lot of alcohol related crimes, like making fake alcohol and violence to get their hands on alcohol. During the ban many new secret establishment opened, that made and sold alcohol illegally. They were called speakeasy, a password was needed to get into one.
  • Spanish Flu

    Spanish Flu
    The Spanish flu was a dangerous flu virus, that lead to a pandemic for two years in Canada. It caused 50 million deaths world wide. The flu was brought into Canada when soldiers fighting in WWI were coming back home. The Spanish flu has gotten it name because the press in Spain started talking about it. However, there isn't an exact location where the Spanish Flue actually originated from, because some believe it was from the US and some don't.

    Bloody Saturday
    Bloody Saturday was a day to mark the end of the Winnipeg General Strike. The strike was about getting fair wages and work time. On Bloody Saturday protester were attacked by the Royale Canadian Mounted Police, because there needed to be an end. This attacked injured many and killed two people.
  • Residential schools

    Residential schools
    Residential schools were schools ran by Christen churches and the Canadian government. These schools would take Aboriginal children from their homes and put them into these schools. The purpose was to teach the children and make them fit into Canadian society, because they thought their family weren't teaching them. The children were forced to get rid of their culture, and would be abused physically and sexually. This lead to generational traumas to all the kids at the residential school.

    Flappers are women who did stuff that would be frowned upon, like wear short clothes, drink, smoke, wear makeup, drive cars and practice sexual freedom. They also are seen having bobbed hair and wearing a short dress dancing to jazz. Most people did not like them, because they were seen reckless and brash for not being traditional. However, thanks to flappers women now have economic, political, and sexual freedom now.

    Talkies are films that had sounds, many people really liked when these came out. The most popular films were The Jazz Singer, Blackmail, Lights of New York and more. This invention helped the film industry to make more films with sounds and increase the popularity it has gain.

    Radio
    The radio in the 1920s were a very popular invention that almost every household had. These radios would broadcast drama, preaching, music, comedy, education, news, storytelling and poetry. However, many preferred polished products from America; by the end the decade 80% of the program were American.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    The act was to exclude Chinese immigrants by limiting immigrants into Canada, and having all Chinese in Canada to register. The amount of Chinese allowed into Canada at the time was maximum 50 or lower. When Chinese people were allowed in it would mostly be husbands, fathers students, diplomats, government representatives and children born in Canada. Anyone who was allowed into Canada had to register or they would risk being fines, detainment, and deportation.

    During the roaring 20s jazz was a very popular type of music that everyone loved. The most popular jazz artist during this decade was Louis Armstrong his most popular song was Knee Drops, Dear Old Southland and West End Blue. When people listened to jazz they would go to jazz clubs to dance; like the Charleston. Not only that, people also went to jazz clubs to socialize and have a few drinks. You would also see many flappers in their fancy dresses dancing too.

    The assembly line was a method that Henry Ford created to make cars faster. This method had workers make a part of the car, and then it would be pull to another set of workers to build the next part. This help reduced the time spend making the cars, that lead to the cars being cheaper. During the 1920s cars were becoming popular so many people bought from Ford because they were cheap. The most popular and best selling car was the model T car from Ford.

    Black Tuesday was the day the stock market crashed and everyone lost all their money that they bought shares with. On that day 16.4 million shares were sold and it left a big impact on Canada; because Black Tuesday was one of the reasons we had The Great Depression.
  • Bennett Buggy

    Bennett Buggy
    A Bennett Buggy was a car without windows and an engine and they were pulled by a horse, because people couldn't afford gasoline for their cars. This car got it name from R.B Bennett, because Canadians he had policies that didn't improve the economy and people thought he was dumb. So People named stuff after him because it was stupid.

    The great depression was a decade that people struggled getting food, and maintaining their jobs and assets. The reasons why the great depress started was that there was a surplus in productions, over expansion, Canada's dependence on wheat, fish, minerals and paper trades, Canada's dependance on US, high tariffs, to much credit buying and credit buying of stocks. People during this time had to share food and make sure to keep their radios for entertainment.
  • Five Cent Speech

    Five Cent Speech
    The five cent speech was made by Mackenzie King and be thought the great depression wasn't going to last long. He also thought that social welfare was the provinces responsibilities, and didn't want to give five-cent piece to any provinces that didn't have a liberal government. During the election of 1930 voters didn't forget about that five cent speech and voted the liberals out of the office. So the conservatives party became in power and replaced King with R.B Bennett.
  • Relief

    During the great depression families who couldn't get food and need help would sign up for a relief program. These programs were run by churches and the government because they needed to help their citizens. However, signing up was seen as shameful and a lot of people felt embarrassed.
