Oklahoma City Bombing
A man named Timothy McVeigh bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Alfred bombed the building using a Ryder truck as the bomb. A third of the building, as well as many cars and more than 300 surrounding buildings were damaged or destroyed by the bomb. 168 people and 19 children were lost due to this bombing and many people got hurt. This bombing in Oklahoma was our nations worst act of terrorism in history. (fbi.gov) -
US Presidential Election
Democrat, Bill Clinton was re-elected into his second presidential term. Bill Clintons Vice President was Al Gore. President Clinton won the election against Republican, Bob Dole and Jack Kemp. President Clintons chance of winning the election became slim half way through the term but was able to successfully recover for the democratic party. Y2k Scare
There was a scare in 2000 called the Y2K scare. There was a problem with the computers that the 99 would have to change to 00. People were scared that there were going to be financial problems that would lead to a huge downfall in society. While the clock struck 12, there were no serious problems that everyone was scared about. The days went on as normal as it was just another year. 9/11
On September 11, 2001, there was a terrorist attack on America. There were 4 planes that got highjacked. Two of the four planes flew into each of the twin towers in New York. One of the planes flew into the Pentagon. The final plane was supposed to hit the White House but landed in a field in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, many lives were lost and injured due to the attack. No Child Left Behind
The No Child Left Behind act was signed in 2002. The No Child Left Behind act was set so that there were set standards in school for children. This act helped to improve the school systems as funding was changing, standardize testing was changing, and requirements were changing. Hurricane Katrina was a huge hurricane that took place in 2005. Many homes and buildings were damaged and many lives were either lost or injured. Hurricane Katrina started around the Gulf of Mexico and landed in Louisiana. Katrina was one of the biggest and most costly storms in the history of the United States. The word, "truthiness" was the word of the year in 2006. The definition of the word, "truthiness" has to do with what people want to be true without needing the facts to prove what is true. George W. Bush came up with this word as it was mocking the arguments made by administration for invading Iraq. This is significant in history as it was a result of the invasion of Iraq. In 2007, Steve Jobs launches the first ever iPhone. Steve Jobs was a CEO of the brand Apple with is now a widely known brand for technology. The first iPhone was a touchscreen, mobile phone that became very popular, very fast. This is an important part of history as the iPhone is still evolving, being used everyday by most people in order to communicate, find new information, and entertain each other. The Joplin tornado was one of the biggest tornadoes in the United States' history. This tornado took place in Joplin, Missouri. The tornado destroyed the whole town of Joplin; killing and injuring many people. This tornado was so big that it had and eye. Same Sex Marriage was finally passed in 2015. This is a law that got passed where people can now have a license to marry people of the same sex.
