The Berlin wall made it to where Berlin could not get goods from other countries. This later resulted in US planes airlifting goods into Berlin; The Berlin Airlift. There was some trouble in the begginning with not having enough olanes to transport, but in the end they worked it out and it helped the people of Berlin tremendously.. -

An Ideological barrier brought up by the Soviet Union after WWII to seal them off from the West and noncommunist areas. Stopped existing when the communist abandonment happened in 1990 -
Truman Doctrine
Stated that the U.S. would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them from falling to the SU. Harry Truman started it and it is considered to be the start of the Cold War. -
European Economic Cooperation
Emerged from the Marshall Plan. Its objective was to prepare the European Recovery Program, and it was also involved in the Marshall Aid dollars. -

George Marshall supplied Europe with nearly $13 billion in aid. It helped Europe's economy greatly and it helped form the North Atlantic trade alliance. The aiding ended in 1952. -

Happened when North Korea invaded South Korea. the Soviets got involved to back up South Korea. In 1953, the war ended, 5 million soldiers and civilians died. -
Explosion of the first hydrogen bomb
The U.S set off its first thermonuclear weapon, on Eniwetok atoll in the Pacific. Was 1,000 times more powerful than regular nuclear devices. speeded up the arms race with the Soviets. -

Was a Soviet leader. Was remembered for being dramatic and a good leader. -

(The Komitet Gosudarstvennoi Bezopanosti) Was initially supposed to be a state security committee in Moscow, Grew to be an angency of spies. -

8 communist states were involved and it was a defense treaty. The USSR dominated it. -

Ended the war between France and Vietnam. They were becoming independent countries. -
Suez Canal/ Nasser
Nasser was the leader of Egypt and came up with the Suez Canal. It took the world by suprise, especially British and French stockholders, who planned to get Nasser back for taking money for the canal. Nasser gave the money back and Egypt kept the canal. -
Helsinki Accords
It was a declaration for respecting human rights. It included the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact countries. It was a turning point in the Cold War, -
Sputnik
The first Earth satellite that the Soviet Union launched. Marked the space age and changed everything. It pushed the U.S. to invent something like it, so we launched Explorer I. -
Berlin Wall is Erected
Germans that were being paid low wages and were unhappy started fleeing to Berlin. To stop this they built the Berlin Wall. It was a huge concrete wall with barbed wire and was patrolled by guards.It worked and helped but was later tore down. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviet Union was sending missiles to Cuba and the president of the U.S demanded they be removed. The U.S had a naval blockade, a week later Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles. -

Communists and North Vietnam attacked South Vietnam. The U.S. was the victor in the Tet Offensive, and the communists lost a lot of people. -
Iranian hostage crisis
Islamic revolutionaries over took the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took more than 60 Americans hostage. The Iranians let go of the hostages after 3 years, just minutes after Ronald Regan was inagurated as president of the U.S., former president Carter didn't know what to do or how to get the hostages home. It was one of the most dramatic and scary things that happened to the U.S. -
Russian Invasion of Afghanistan
Hazifullah Amin, the prime minister of Afghanistan wanted to get rid of the the Muslim traditions in Afghan and replace them with more western traditions. This didn't work because the people got angry and revolted. The Russians tried to help Amin, but later it all failed. -
Moscow Olympics
65 countries boycotted because of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. It was first to be staged in Eastern Europe. Prompted the boycott oplympics in 1984. -
Lech Walesa and the Solidarity Movement in Poland
Lech was a Polish politician, president, trade-union organizer, and human-rights activist, he also co-founded the Solidarity Movement. Was arrested multiple times for doing strikes and such. He started out as an unepmloyed electrician and ended up changing history for Poland. -

Because of the American-led boycott in Moscow for the 1980 olympics, 14 eastern countries boycotted the games. The boycotting countries organized the friendship games, but feel through. -

Mikhail Gorbachev set it up, The words had different meanings, and they kept changing. -

It is in the center Bejing, China and the site of several important events in Chinese history. It is the focal point of the Tiananment Square protests of 1989. -

The Berlin Wall was torn down 3 decades after it was built. After awhile it became useless, and it just kept tourists away, and It had alot of graffiti on it, so it gave Berlin a bad reflection. -
