    Leif Eriksson
    He was the first European to discover North America. He was the son of Erik the Red and he was a Viking. The reason he did not get credit for finding North America is bad documentation, they did not settle because of Indian attacks.

    Christopher Columbus

    Christopher Columbus
    Christopher Columbus discovered North America. He was Italian but sailed for Spain. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to reach India. He died still thinking he found a new route to India.

    Vasco Da Gama

    Vasco Da Gama
    He was a Portuguese explorer. He was the first person to lead an expedition aroud the Cape of Good Hope (in Africa.) This opened a new route to India for Portugal. This also made Portugal a rich country, made other European countries want to find their own route, and started the slave trade.

    Vasco Nunez de Balboa

    Vasco Nunez de Balboa
    He was born in Jerez de los Caballeros Spain. He was a Spanish conquistador and explorer. He was the first European to find the Pacific Ocean. In 1518 Governor Pedro Arias Davila falsely accused Balboa and wanted him to be arrested. In 1519 Balboa was beheaded for treason.

    Ferdinand Magellan

    Ferdinand Magellan
    He was the captain of a voyage that circumnavigated the globe. They were the first to do so. When the voyage returned to Portugal there was only one ship with eighteen men. In 1521 Magellen was killed in a local Philppean war and did not complete the voyage.

    Jacques Cartier
    He was a French navigator and was born in Saint-Malo, France. He explored the Saint Lawrence River and discovered Canada. He claimed it for France. Like Henry Hudson, Cartier also went looking for the North West Passage for France but also failed.
  • Henry Hudson

    Henry Hudson
    He was an English sailor but sailed for the Dutch and England. He discovered Hudson Bay and it was named after him. He was searching for the North West Passage but failed to find it because there is no river that sails straight through North America. In 1610, some of his crew mutinied against him and Hudson and other members of the crew were cast onto a small boat and were never seen again.
