First Public School in Boston
This was the first public school formed in America. It was started to teach Latin grammar to boys ages 8 through 15. This school's main focus was to prepare boys for college. The reason for learning Latin was for the interpretion of the bible. Religion was one of the main reasons for beginning of education. -
The Massachusetts Law of 1647
This law made it a requirement of town's of 50 or more families to have properly educated teacher and town's of 100 or more families to a establish a proper grammer school. These school were intended to prepare students for admission to Harvard College. -
Noah Webster Creates A Grammatical Institute Of The English Language
He wrote these three books consiting of spellin, grammar, and reading. These books became the most widely used text books in the United States. -
The First High School
This is the first official public high school created in our nation. Boston English High School was then opened. -
First Mandatory Attendance Law
Massachusetts was the first state to make it mandatory for children to attend school. Children ages 8 through 14 were required to attend the local school for a minimum of 12 weeks a year. Many states followed with this law as well, resulting in the fact that every state passed this law by 1918. -
First Kindergarten In The U.S.
This was the first kindergarten. It started in Watertown, Wisconsin and was coducted in German. The idea was to basically prepare children for school. -

This order helped states establish effective school systems. -
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka
The Supreme Court announced that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. This act overturned the previous ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson. -
The Civil Rights Act
This outlawed the major formes of discrimination. Discrimination against: racial, ethnic, religious, minorities, and women were the main ones. This eliminted segregation in public schools. -
Education of All Handicapped Children Act
This law was passed to require all public shools to teach and evaluate children that were handicapped. The law opened up a lot of oppertunities for children with disabilities who before hand never had the chance to become educated. -
No Child Left Behind Act
This law replaces the Bilingual Education Act originally established in 1968. It mandated high-stakes student testing while holding schools to standards for achievement levels of students.
