    It was fought by armies of the French and the British against the German empire. The battle essentially stopped the German advance into France, preventing them from capturing Paris.

    both sides dug trenches for war. there was barbed wire separating no man's land and the trenches. behind the trenches were heavy artillery weapons.

    The British and french forces hoped to achieve a decisive victory against the germans, but the battle ended up being incredibly costly for both sides with over a million men killed or wounded.

    The war brought with it an increase in artillery and experimentation in artillery tactics. Cannons like this French Schneider 155mm howitzer were used by the U.S. Army to attack the German lines. A trained crew could fire three 100-pound shells per minute a distance of approximately 12,500 yards.

    pilots were required to learn new tactics to evade increasingly sophisticated enemy aircraft. Developments were also made in weaponry such as the Model 1918 Lewis Machine Gun which had a higher rate of fire than its predecessor.
