    40 horus of fighting until the fort fell to the south. The southern leader let the Union soldiers that were left leave safely.

    President Lincoln made it so that cargo ships couldn't deliver supplies to the Confederacy.

    It was the first major land battle in the civil war.

    Monitor vs. Virginia naval battle
    The confederates realized that they could not defeat the Union army on land. They busted through their wooded walls and they went to war in the sea. It took a very long time because both ships had heavy armor on their sides. Ammunition was key in the battle.

    The Union snuck into the Tennesse land and suprised attacked the South on the first day, but was completly destoryed the second day of the war.

    In a series of battles the Southern army led by Generals Joseph E. Johnston and Robert E. Lee, the South managed to drive back the Union army. The battle took place for 7 days (6 major battles). June 25th- July 1, 1862.

    The battle lasted from August 28-30. It was a much larger battle than the first battle of bull run. The South had captured supplies so the North took position and fired upon them.

    It was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with 22,717 dead, wounded and missing on both sides combined.
  • Emancipation Proclamation issued

    Was an order issued by President Lincoln stating that ALL slaves be free forever. Every state was suppose to do it but the slave states that were not in rebellion.

    Emancipation Proclamation takes effect
    President Abraham Lincoln signs the final Emancipation Proclamation, which ends slavery in the rebelling states. A preliminary proclamation was issued in September 1862, following the Union victory at the Battle of Antietam in Maryland.

    A risky battle that made the Union split in half and almost lose this battle. Lasted from April 30- May 6.

    Robert E. Lee invaded Philidelphia trying to gain control and get recognition and independence for the Confederate states. The battle lasted 3 days until the southerners were forced back to north virginia.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    The Union foraced the South across the MIssissippi back to where they could defend themselves around the city of Vicksburg.

    The battled last from November 23-25. The Union army won the battle.
  • Ulysses S. Grant takes over the Union Army

    Ulysses S. Grant takes over the Union Army
    President Abraham Lincoln signs a brief document officially promoting then-Major General Ulysses S. Grant to the rank of lieutenant general of the U.S. Army, tasking the future president with the job of leading all Union troops against the Confederate Army.
  • Sherman captures Atlanta

    Sherman captures Atlanta
    Union Maj. Gen. James B. McPherson was killed during the battle. Union siege and various attempts to seize railroads and supply lines leading to Atlanta. After taking the city, Sherman's troops headed south-southeastward toward Milledgeville, the State capital, and on to Savannah with the March to the Sea.

    With his re-election, any hope for a negotiated settlement with the Confederacy vanished. The war was now in its fourth year, and many were questioning if the South could ever be fully conquered militarily. Union General Ulysses S. Grant mounted a massive campaign in the spring of that year to finally defeat the Confederate army of General Robert E. Lee, but after sustaining significant losses at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, the Yankees bogged down around Petersburg, Virginia.
  • Sherman begins march to the sea

    Sherman begins march to the sea
    It started when Sherman left th ecaptured city of Atlanta, Georgia. It lasted from November 15-December 21 1864. It ended with the capture of the port of Savannah on December 21. Sherman's forces destroyed military targets as well as industry, infrastructure, and civilian property.

    Sherman's Union army captured Savannah, Georgia. They then created a military barrier that stretches from east to west across the South, closing the Confederate army's attempts to move men and supplies through the region
  • Robert E. Lee surrenders

    Robert E. Lee surrenders
    Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders his 28,000 troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War. Forced to leave the Confederate capital of Richmond, blocked from joining the surviving Confederate force in North Carolina, and harassed constantly by Union cavalry, he had no other option.

    It was the final thing that ended the Civil War.
  • Abraham Lincoln shot and killed

    Abraham Lincoln shot and killed
    Lincoln was the first American president to be assassinated,[2] though an unsuccessful attempt had been made on Andrew Jackson 30 years before in 1835. The assassination was planned and carried out by the well-known stage actor John Wilkes Booth, as part of a larger conspiracy in a bid to revive the Confederate cause.

    A document that stated, slavery is completly banned in the United States.
