Ute People Receive Horses from Spanish
Utes acquired horses from the Spanish by 1680. Especially in the eastern areas, horses increased Ute mobility, allowing them to focus on big game mammals and adopt Plains Cultural elements.Horses allowed the Ute Indians to move around more. -
Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velz De Escalante Visit
The first Caucasians to explore this area were Franciscan priests Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velz De Escalante who stopped on the Green River in 1776. The first caucasians arrived in our area in 1776. -
Mountain men and trappers like William Henry Ashley look for beaver.
1825 American trappers affiliated with William H. Ashley and led by Johnson Gardner and Peter Skene Ogden of the rival Hudson's Bay Company, a British outfit, met imperviously at Mountain Green on the Weber River.William H. Ashley arranged for his men to meet at Henry's Fork of the Green River for what became the first annual rendezvous. The next three rendezvous were held in Utah--one in Cache Valley and the next two on the south end of Bear Lake.Early trappers and mountain men criss-crossed the area in search of beaver (which paid $8.00 a pound). One of these, William Henry Ashley, left his name on the valley and its main creek. -

Settlers Arrive
On February 14, 1873, Pardon Dodds and others entered the valley to raise livestock. They settled in Ashley, Uintah County's first county seat.With animals and other people, Parson Dodds settled in what is now Uintah County. -
