TERMS "TOUR" AND "TOURIST"
The term "tour" was introduced and soon the term "tourist" came into being to refer to the participants of entertainment and educational events. -
Period: to
19th century
In the 19 th century tourism was mainly for the rich. They had enough money and spare time for travelling.
Well-to-do people used to take tours to France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
In the early 19th century tourists used to travel by trains and steamships.
In the first half of the 19th century steamships used to move within inland waterways only. -
SEA CRUISES
The first tourist trip by steamship Great Western was the starting point for the development of sea cruises. It was one of the entertaining tours. Napoleon's invasive wars opened Egypt for the West which became popular among tourists. But at the same time many areas remained unattractive for tourists: for example only northern part of Africa was available for tourists by the sea. -
THOMAS COOK COMPANY
Thomas Cook Company is the oldest travel company in the world. As a matter of fact, Thomas Cook from England opened the age of organized tourism. It started in 1841 when Thomas Cook arranged the first trip for 570 Englishmen by railway. -
FIRST GROUP TOUR
In 1843 he organized the first group tour by train. This time he provided tourists with meals and tickets for the races. So it was the first package tour. -
FIRST INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION
Later on Thomas Cook made arrangements for organized visits to the First International Exhibition, opened in London in 1851. The tourists came from different parts of England -
EXHIBITION IN PARIS
in 1855 Thomas Cook arranged the first overseas trip to the Exhibition in Paris. After that regular trips started to other countries of Europe. -
RUSSIAN FIRST TRAVEL AGENCY
The country’s first national travel agency emerged in St. Petersburg in 1885. It was founded by L.Lipson. The travel agency got the name of ‘Enterprise for Public Travel to All Parts of the World’. -
INTRNATIONAL PASSPORTS
In 1920 a special Conference of the League of Nations on Passports was convened. It was recommended to introduce as a uniform a form of a foreign passport of the "international type" in which there would be no more than 32 pages and all data should be duplicated in English or French -
THE WORLD TOURIST ORGANIZATION
In 1975 the United Nations established the World Tourist Organization (UNWTO). It emerged on the basis of the International Union of Official Tourist Organizations.
The UNWTO is the international intergovernmental organization. Actually, it is a worldwide group of government travel organizations. It deals with promoting tourism throughout the world. It assists countries in the development of national tourism.
