    Alfred Hitchcock - the english film maker and director - contributed to the shaping of what the Thriller genre is today. He released his firt silent film (The Lodger) in 1926. This had a thrilling Jack the ripper type storyline.

    Hitchcock soon developed his dark and thrilling pictures into a more glamarous affair. They includded glamarous stars and released various classic films including strangers on a train (1951), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) and Vertigo (1958). 1960 saw the release of prehaps Hitchcocks most well known film Psycho. This was quite a shock to the industry and audiences as it gained mixed reviews but it bought a new level of socially acceptable violence and sexuality into the media.
