us royalty controversy
In october 1998 the us gov passed the dmca which made radio station pay an expensive royalty to continue running. it was so expensive many stations thought they would have to shutdown. however on june 26 2007 many radio stations completely shut down to protest the royalty. so some small stations were allowed to pay smaller royalties. whoever in January 2016 that rule was changed -

In 2003 music on the internet gained 49 million dollars in revenue by 2006 that rose to 500 million dollars. 19% of U.S. consumers 12 and older listen to Web-based radio stations.
