History of the Phonograph

  • First version of phonograph is invented

    The first version was created by Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville in France. It could not play sound, though. It created airborne noise onto paper for studying visually. It was mainly used in labs.

    Thomas Edison invented this in 1877. It created and played sound. He received a patent for it on February 19th, 1878.

    In 1901, there was a mass production of wax cylinders, which were used to record and play the music. After this, the phonograph became very popular.
