    Hubert Kemp Becomes First Chief of the MNPD
    July 10th, 1964 graduating class of the Metro Nashville Police Department Command School, with Chief Kemp in Nashville Tennessee. Kemp was the first Chief of the Metro Nashville Police Department, serving from 1963 to 1972.
  • Blue Lites were Formed

    Blue Lites were Formed
    The Blue Lites were a rock and roll band whose members worked for the MNPD. It was mainly active in the 1970s and 1980s. They performed in schools and fundraisers for the American Red Cross Association. They recently had a reunion in 2018.
  • Metro Officer Shot Woman While Sitting in Patrol Car

    Metro Officer Bill Sneed shoots and kills Jacques Brooks while sitting inside his patrol car. Sneed had responded to a domestic abuse call, and Brooks stood outside his car holding a kitchen knife. Sneed shot Brooks, who was mentally ill, five times. Metro officials settled a civil suit with Brooks’ family, and Sneed was later promoted to lieutenant. He was never indicted for the wrongdoing. Caused a huge uproar by community.

    Officers Attack Fellow Officer During Undercover Sting
    Five white officers attack Black police Officer Reginald Miller after a traffic stop, claiming they mistook him for a “john” in a prostitution ring. Miller was beaten severely while working his first undercover sting. Two of the officers were fired.

    Officer Shoots Unarmed Man, Later Teaches De-Escalation Techniques
    Officer Joe Shelton shoots and kills unarmed burglary suspect Reginald Wallace. Wallace was shot while reaching into his pocket. Shelton said Wallace pulled out a shiny object, it turned out to be an iPod. Shelton was later transferred to the Metro Police Training Academy to teach “de-escalation techniques and firearm proficiency.”

    First MNPD Officer Charged with Murder On-Duty
    Officer Andrew Delke shoots and kills 25-year-old Daniel Hambrick during a foot chase. Delke shot Hambrick in the back as he was fleeing.He has since been charged with first-degree murder and is awaiting trial.(He eventually pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter)He is the first MNPD officer ever to be charged with murder for an on-duty shooting.

    John Drake Named Chief of Police for MNPD
    John Drake has been selected as the next chief of police for the Metro Nashville Police Department. "Nashville wants a chief who can make changes, build trust, and increase safety for all our residents,” Mayor Cooper said. “During his time on the force and as interim chief, he has reached out to neighborhoods and communities across Nashville. He has shown he is committed to collaboration.

    Police Officers Equipped with Body Cameras
    THIS IS THE LARGEST DEPLOYMENT OF BODY-WORN AND IN-CAR SYSTEMS FOR ANY PD IN THE COUNTRY.
    As of July 13th, officers are now equipped with body cameras, as deployed to all 8 precincts. That's about 1,184 body-worn cameras and 665 cars with 3 cameras a piece.
