Manhattan Project Begins

Col. Leslie Groves became the leader of the Manhattan Project. Groves imediatly started work to woards to goal of creating a weapon that would end the war, by purchasing 52,000 acres of land to create Oak Ridge. On October 15, 1942 Gorves asked Dr. Robert Oppenheimer to lead Project Y at a new site in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Over all the project had 120,000 people working on it but only a select few new what the purpose was. -
First Reactor
Enrico Fremi started the C1-P reactor which is the first human build reactor. Aftermath
After the bombing it was clear that the Manhattan Project was a success. The bomb that was built astounded the expectaions of the scientist who built it and the bombs completed there goal of ending the war as quicly as possible. However, the success of the bombs also caused many other countries to start their own projects leading the world in an age with the threat of world annihilation from nuclear warfare. Over all the Atomic bomb has been one of the most infulential inventions in the world -
First Atomic Bomb Detonated
US HistoryTrinity Site near Alamogord, New Mexico The first Atomic Bomb was deatonated from a hight of 100 ft. The explosion was equivelent to 18,000 tons of TNT and created a flash that was seen from 200 miles away, a cloud 40,000 ft high, blew out the windows in homes up to 100 miles away, and turned the sand around it to glass. The U.S Government stated that there was a large amunitions dump that exploded to keep the project secret. -
Atomic Bombs Dropped on Japan
After winning the war in Europe, the U.S wanted to end the war in Japan quickly. President Trumans advisors informed him that an ivasion of Japan could cause 1 million casualties. Truman decided to use the Atomic Bombs to force surrender to avoid the number of casualties. A 9,000 ton Uranium 235 was dropped on Hiroshima instantly killing 80,000 people. After three days of no surrender, The U.S dropped a 10,000 ton Plutonium bomb on Nagasaki killing 40,000. The Japanese finally surrendered. -

Although Einstien sent the letter that encoraged the Manhattan Project, he was not allowed to work on it for fear that he would tell the Germans. The Manhattan project was originaly in two groups. One tried to build the Atomic bomb, while the other focused on building an Atomic gun. The project gained the highest security level possible in the U.S during its time. After some time the Soviets were able to infiltrate part of the project with a spy. However they did not discover any useful info
