Democritus
-Based his theory on logic at the time
-First man to come up with an atomic theory
-Thought there was an infinite amount of atoms that were always moving and were indivisible. Also thought that they're invisible but solid. -
Antoine Lavoisier
-Came up with the Law of Conservation of Mass
-The basis of the law is that mass cannot be created or destroyed, only rearranged and altered. -
John Dalton
-All matter is made up of small indivisible particles called atoms.
-Atoms of different elements have different proportions.
-Cannot be subdivided, created, or destroyed.
-Combine to form chemical compounds.
-In chemical reactions, atmos are rearranged. -
Julius Plucker
-Conducted the Cathode Ray Tube Experiment
-Unintentionaly discovered electrons
-Coined them "Cathode Rays" -
Dmitrii Mendeleev
-Created the first periodic table
-Organized it by increasing atomic massmof elements
-This is the Atomic Theory -
Max Planck
-Founder of the Quantum Theory
-Quantum theory helps explain sub-atomic particles and atoms in general. -
J. J. Thompson
-Credited with coining the term, electron.
-Created the "Plum Pudding" model
-Electrons surrounded by an area of positive charge. -
Hantaro Nagaoka
-Came up an early model of what an atom could look like.
-The "Santarium Model"
-Incorrect model based on the rings of Saturn. -
Ernest Rutherford
-Did the "Gold Foil' experiment.
-By shining rays through a think gold foil, Rutherford discovered the nucleus in atoms.
-Led him to create the Rutherford model which consisted on a positively charged nucleus surrounded by electrons. -
Niels Bohr
-Created the Bohr model.
-A positively charged mucleus surrounded by elcectrons like the Rutherford model.
-The difference is that he theorized that the electrons orbited the nucleus like the solar system. -
Erwin Schrodinger
-Discovered that electrons are located in a electronic cloud surrounding the nucleus called the Quantum mechanical Model.
-Used statistics and geometry to come up with wave mechanics.
-Also used the "old quantum theory" -
James Chadwick
-Used Hugh Webster's findings as evidence for his theory of a neutron.
-Credited for discovering the neutron, a sub-atomic particle with no charge
-Protons and neutrons in the center surrounded by electrons.
