History of the Atom

  • Dalton

In the 1800s, John Dalton devised experiments using chemicals and proved that atoms were, in fact, real.
  • JJ Thomson

In 1897, Thomson discovered electrons and built a diagram based on that discovery. He knew that electrons had a negative charge.
  • Ernest Rutherford.

In 1911, Ernest Rutherford used radium and a piece of gold foil to try and look inside the atom.
  • Neils Bohr

In 1912, Neils came up with some rules that came with electrons. They state, : Electrons can only orbit at certain distances from the nucleus. :Atoms radiate energy when an electron jumps from a higher-energy orbit to a lower-energy orbit. Also, an atom absorbs energy when an electron gets boosted from a low-energy orbit to a high-energy orbit.
  • Erwin Schrödinger

Erwin had an idea; to use particle waves and form a model from that wave. The model didn't question the makeup of the waves, so he called it "psi" or "Ψ"
  • Today

Today we are to the point where seeing atoms is easy, and we're making improvements all the time.
