John Dalton
Around 1803 Dalton proposed the first useful atomic theory of matter. He got to this theory through the use of meteorology. Before this he focused on color blindness which really interested him. e proposed the Atomic Theory in 1803 which stated that (1) all matter was composed of small indivisible particles termed atoms, (2) atoms of a given element possess unique characteristics and weight, and (3) three types of atoms exist: simple (elements), compound (simple molecules), and complex (complex -
Daltons Model
Dalton’s atomic model is one of the fundamentals of physics and chemistry. He discovered that certain gases only could be combined in certain proportions even if two different compounds shared the same common element or group of elements. Sir William Crookes
Crookes was the inventor of the Crookes radiometer,He used this pump to withdraw air from sealed glass tubes. Crookes observed that the negative electrode (the cathode) gave off a stream of charged particles. He discovered the element thalium, and developed a chemical process for separating gold and silver from their ores. Site: "Sir William Crookes." HowStuffWorks. N.p., n.d. J.J Thompson
. He originally called these particles 'corpuscles,' although they are now called electrons. This discovery upended the prevailing theory that the atom was the smallest fundamental unit.he discovered that neon was composed of two different kinds of atoms, and proved the existence of isotopes in a stable element Site: "Plum Pudding Model." J. J. Thomson’s Model (Plum Pudding Atomic Model)
J. J. Thomson, who discovered the electron in 1897, In this model, the atom is composed of electrons (surrounded by a soup of positive charge to balance the electrons' negative charges, like negatively charged "plums" -
Ernest Rutherford
In 1899 Ernest Rutherford studied the absorption of radioactivity by thin sheets of metal foil and found two components: alpha (a) radiation, which is absorbed by a few thousandths of a centimeter of metal foil, and beta (b) radiation, which can pass through 100 times as much foil before it was absorbed.known as the father of nuclear physics. He is considered the greatest experimentalist since Michael Faraday Site: "The Rutherford Model." The Rutherford Model. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Sept. 2013. -
Rutherford Model
A source which undergoes alpha decay is placed in a lead box with a small hole in it. Any of the alpha particles which hit the inside of the box are simply stopped by the box. Only those which pass through the opening are allowed to escape, and they follow a straight line to the gold foil. -
Niels Bohr
He is known for the creation of the Bohr Model.Bohr was a philosopher and a promoter of scientific research.Bohr was the first to apply the quantum theory, which restricts the energy of a system to certain discrete values, to the problem of atomic and molecular structure. Bohr Model
depicts the atom as small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by electrons that travel in circular orbits around the nucleus—similar in structure to the solar system, but with attraction provided by electrostatic forces rather than gravity. -
James Chadwick Research
Chadwick is known for discovering the neutron. Chadwick could show that in the reaction, a neutral particle with a mass about that of a proton, was emitted. Before Ernest Rutherford had said that such a particle could exist in the nuclei. He was given the noble prize in physics in 1935 and Hughes medal in 1932. Site: "James Chadwick - Biographical." Quantum Mechanical Model
The quantum mechanical model is based on quantum theory, which says matter also has properties associated with waves. According to quantum theory, it’s impossible to know the exact position and momentum of an electron at the same time Site: "A Brief History of Quantum Mechanics."
