History of the atom

  • Isaac Newtown

    Isaac Newtown
Isaac was noted for the mechanical universe with small solid masses in motion. Democritus was the person that influnced Isaac in his theory. Isaac changed the way we look at atoms because he invented a new telescope, he called it the reflecting telescope.
  • Benjamin Thompson

    Benjamin Thompson
Benjamin was influenced by Henri Becquerel. Benjamin's main scientific contributions were to do with heat. At this time he thought that heat is a form of matter. He changed the way we looked at atoms because he helped recoginse the atomic model.
  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
John made accurate measurements of the composition of chemical compound. It was found that the compounds containing more than one element always had the same relative amounts of each element. He thought that there is a point in matter where it cannot be broken down. It changed the way we look at atoms because it could not be made, destroyed or broken down.
  • Michael Faraday

    Michael Faraday
Michael studied the effect on electricity and he described electrolysis as a splitting of molecules with electricity. John Dalton was the person that influenced Michael. He changed the way we looked at atoms because he discovered the fist organic compounds containing many this such as, chlorine, liquefied, several gases, and discovered butylene.
  • J. Plucker

    J. Plucker
The person that influenced J.Plucker was Michael Faraday, he was the scientist before Plucker, he developed the two laws of electrochemistry. J. Plucker built one of the first gas discharge tubes. He changed the way we look at atoms because he was a person that built a gas discharge tubes.
  • G.J Stoney

The person that influenced G.J Stoney was James Maxwell, he was the scientist before G.J Stoney, he proposed the theory of electromagnetism, he also made the connection between light and electromagnetic waves. Suggested that electricity was made of discrete negative particles he called them electrons. Stoney changed the way we look at atoms because he was the one who suggested that electricity was made from negative particles.
  • Dmitri Mendeleev

    Dmitri Mendeleev
The person that influenced Dmitri was J.Plucker, he was the scientist before Dmitri, he built one of the first cathode-ray tubes. Dmitri was noted for making elements into 7 groups with similar properties. He discovered that properties of elements were periodic functions. Mendeleev changed the way that we looked at atoms because he invented the periodic table.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
Ernest supervised Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden, who carried out what is known as the gold foil experiment. He also advanced the next step in the atomic structure. His mum and dad and family were the people that influenced him. Ernest changed the way we look at atoms because his atomic model suggested an atom consists of central charge.
  • Francis William Aston

The person that influenced Francis Aston was H.G.J Moseley, he was the scientist before Francis, he discovered the number of protons in an element. Discovered the existence of isotopes through the uses of a mass. Aston changed the way we look at atoms because he was trained as a chemist, he used x-rays for an example of atoms.
  • Soddy

The person that influenced Soddy, was Max Planck, he was the scientist before Soddy, he proposed the idea of quantization to explain how hot, glowing object emitted light. He observed the breakdown of radioactive elements. Soddy changed the way that we looked at atoms because he observed the breakdown of elements that were in the atoms.
  • Niels Bohr

    Niels Bohr
Niels contributed in the quantum theory of the atomic model which states an atom emits electromagnetic radiation only when an electron changes from one energy to another. Francis Aston was the person that influenced Neils. Neils changed the way we look at atoms because he added a nucleus, which made up protons and neaurons.
  • James Chadwick

The person that influenced James Chadwick was Paul Dirac, he was the scientist before James, he discovered the existence of anti-particles. He discovered a neutral atomic particle with a mass. James Chadwick changed the way we look at atoms because neutrons help stabilize the protons in the atoms nucleus.
  • Enrico Fermi

The person that influenced Enrico Fermi was Glenn Seaborg, he was the scientist before Enrico, he discovered eight transuranium elements. He controlled chain reaction. Fermi changed the way that we looked at atoms because he was the one that controlled the reaction.
  • Democritus

    Democritus
Democritus was born 460BC and died 370 BC. He had the idea that matter was made up of minuscule and irreducible particles, he called them atoms. Leucippus and Melissus of Samos influenced Democritus in his theory. Democritus changed the way we looked at atoms because he knew that he could cut the atoms down to the right size.
  • Aristotle

    Aristotle
Aristotle was born 384BC and died 322 BC. He was recognized as one of the most important founders in the Western Philosophy. He also contributed in the scientific method, he was the founder of the study of formal logic. Nichomachus (his father) and Plato were the people that influenced him. Aristotle changed the way we look at atoms because atoms were a constant motion in void, also because of the 4 elements which are earth, air, water and fire.
