The Perkins School for the blind
The Perkins School for the Blind was founded in 1829 and gave many educational opportunities for those who were blind, visually impaired, and deaf-blind. Before the name it has today, it was named The New England Asylum for the Blind. Just a year after the school opened, Thomas Handasyd Perkins donated his home in order to accommodate more students. In 1839 to show the school's generosity, it was renamed Perkins Institution and Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind. -
Spanish Braille Code
The Spanish Braille code was standardized on June 30, 1878, to help those whose primary language was Spanish. It provided a tactile reading and writing system for Spanish users. They were finally given the same educational opportunities as others. -
Council for Exceptional Children
The Council for Exceptional Children was an organization founded in 1922. It began with 12 members who recognized the crucial role of standards in defining special education as a profession. They aimed to focus on the establishment of professional standards to improve this field of education. -
Brown v.Board of Education
The Supreme Court came to a decision and decided that it was unconstitutional to separate children in public schools based on their race. The Autism Society of America was founded by Ruth C.Sullivan in honor of her son who also had autism. She decided to devote her life and work towards this cause, thus, the reason why she founded this organization. This organization advocated in the disability space by ensuring classroom and public places are accessible and inclusive. -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965 was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This law provided federal funding to low-income students with disadvantages. It distributed funds to school districts with high-poverty populations, improving their education in any way possible. -
Mills v.Board of Education of District Columbia
The United States district court for the District of Columbia stated that students with disabilities have the right to an education and their needs will be accommodated. This was brought to court after 7 children were denied an education for this very reason. Today any student with a disability has the same educational rights as others. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) emphasized the importance of education plans, parental involvement, and inclusive practices. It granted children with disabilities the same free public School opportunities. It adjusted to their needs and way of learning. -

The Introduction of Response to Intervention (RTI) came about in 2004. RTI represents a method used in schools to evaluate the needs of students when receiving an education. It is used to assist students who may need more intensive instructional services. -
Every Student Succeeds Act
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 was established as a law by President Barack Obama. It replaced the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002. The purpose of ESSA was to provide each and every student with the same educational opportunities to receive the best education they can. Youtube
