Brown V. Board of Education
The Supreme Court ruled dividing students into different classrooms based on race was unconstitutional. It was decided that there would be no more segregated classrooms in America. The ruling was a turning point for students and educators fighting for civil rights. Chief Justice Warren said, “We conclude that in the field of public education the doctrine Separate but Equal’ has no place”.

Elementary and Secondary Education Act- ESEA
The Elementary and Secondary Education act was signed into law in 1965, by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This law protects students from low income families and those with disabilities. This was later on turned into the Education of the Handicapped act in 1970. -
The Rehabilitation Act
The purpose of the Rehabilitation Act is to stop discrimination of those with disabilities solely due to their specific disability. This grants these individuals with better opportunities in the workplace, universities, and community centers. -
The Education for all Handicapped Children Act
This act allows all free public school education be available for all handicapped children. In addition, this also helps educators identify what is being misclassified as a disability and determines who needs access to more additional support. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
Similar to the IDEA, the Americans with Disabilities Act puts a stop against discrimination of those with disabilities in employment and public spaces, as well as access to government programs and services. -
Individuals with Disabilities Act- IDEA
The IDEA requires all schools that receive money from the federal government to provide students who have disabilities an education that is designed to cater to their specific needs. Thus giving them the same opportunities provided to students who do not have disabilities. -
No Child Left Behind Act- ESEA
This act was signed into effect on January 8th, 2002 by President George W. Bush replacing the ESEA. This act supported instating high standards and goals that could improve an individual's education. States were required to conduct assessments of their students to gain abetter understanding of what they knew and at what level. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act
Congress updated this act by adding that all students with disabilities should be allowed access to the general education being taught in a regular classroom. -
Response to Intervention
Research based intervention identified for each individuals specific needs. Approval for recieving this may depend on the students ability or inability to make progress. -
Every Student Succeeds Act-ESSA
ESSA was signed into effect by President Barack Obama on April 30th, 2015. This law was signed in order to replace the No Child Left Behind Act signed into law in 2002.
