American School for the Deaf
American School for the Deaf is one of the first and oldest schools created for students with hearing disabilities. The school is located in West Hartford, Connecticut. It was founded April 15, 1817. Brown vs Board of Education
The Brown vs Board of Education started in 1952 and came to a decision in 1954. The ruling determined that "separate but equal" was unconstitutional and therefore all schools should desegregate. However the case did not immediately fix this issue but was the beginning of the fight for equality in schools. This case ultimately helped schools treat all students equally over the years, including students with disabilities, different races, and genders. -
Learning Disabilities Association (LDA)
LDA was founded in the year 1963. This non-profit organization was created by parents and families in order to provide support for all people with learning disabilities. The creators stated the reason for establishing this organization was to provide the recognition of the dire need for services for their children with learning disabilities. -
Mills vs Board of Education of District of Columbia
The case of Mills vs Board of Education of the District of Columbia which took place in the year 1972, ruled that all students with disabilities must be given the opportunity to an education even if they were unable to afford it. It was established that no student should be denied an education due to behavioral issues or other learning disabilities. -
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 - Section 504

The Education for all Handicapped Children Act was established by the U.S Congress in 1975. This act was established to ensure that all public schools provide equal education to all students, as well as free lunch to students with disabilities. Best Buddies
The Best Buddies program was founded in 1989 in Georgetown University. This non-profit organization consists of volunteers who build one-on-one friendships with students with disabilities. The program provides students with disabilities with many new opportunities. -
Greer vs Rome City School District
This case began in 1992 when Christy Greer, a handicapped child, felt that her school did not comply with the Education for all Handicapped Children Act. The case helped to ensure that all handicapped children should be educated in a regular classroom unless the assistance and supplemental services they receive do not help them achieve their educational needs. -
Individualized Education Plan
The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) was created to assist teachers in ensuring a proper education plan is set in place for students with disabilities that impair their ability to learn in a regular classroom. It is essentially a plan that is developed for each individual student who is part of the special education program in their school. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
IDEA which was originally EHA ( Education for all Handicapped Children Act), was reauthorized in 2004. This act states that children with disabilities are entitled to receive the same education as those who do not have disabilities. This act also ensures that students with disabilities are not restricted in their learning environments.
