    The troops both approched the Urga River. They fought a 4-day battle both troops trying to cross the river. Eventually the Russians sucseeded through firearms because the Mongold had none.

    Reformer Boris Yelstin is elected president of the Russia republic. He shocks soveit officals by quiting the Communist party.

    In August, a group of hard-line Communists tries to seize power from Gorbachev in a failed coup. Yelstin defends Gorbachev. But in December he and the leaders of the other republics create a new alliance to replace the Soviet Union. On December 25 Gorbachev resigns, and the Soviet Union is no more.
