  • David Hughes

    David Hughes
    In 1878, David Hughes finds that sparks created by an induction balance create sounds. He rigs this up to a portable reciver and carrys it down the strer; finding that it can be heard for some distance. He went on to present his findings to the Royal Society.
  • Marconi

    Marconi
    Guglielmo Marconi begins to persue the idea of radio waves at this time. He bgean to experiment with differnet types of wires and arrangements. When he showed his family what he created, they were all supportive of him.
  • Radio Factory

    Radio Factory
    Marconi opened the first Radio Factory in England. He employed around 50 people at first, but at its peak the factory employed 4,500. After WWII the company wa spurchased from Marconi by Englsih Electric.
  • Weak Radio Tranmission

    Weak Radio Tranmission
    In 1900, Reginald Fessenden made a weak tranmission of voice over on radio waves. His work would lead him to get a contract ith the Weather Bureau, but retain ownership of his inventions. This contract gave him money, workspace, and housing.
  • Wardenclyffe Tower

    Wardenclyffe Tower
    Tesla began construction on Wardenclyffe Tower, a wireless transmission tower. Despite his efforts, by 1905 the project ran out of funding and was stopped.
  • Telefunken

    Telefunken
    The Telefunken company was started by Siemens & Halske and the General Electric Company for radio broadcasting in Berlin. In 1911, they created three towers. Siemens left the company in 1941.
  • Diode Valve

    Diode Valve
    Professor AMbrose Fleming invented the diode valve. It's used to help recivers pick decect radio signals using an electrical current.

    On this date, music was first broadcasted on the radio. THis was a pivitoal point in saving radio when TVs first came about.

    9XM
    Station 9Xm was the first radio station to largely broadcast human speech. They began morse code transmission in 1916. Regularly scheduled broadcasts began in January of 1921.

    The Marconi Company made their first broadcasts from their factory. They had two daily broadcasts, and while this may seem small it had a huge impact at the time.

    During this time amatuers began using the long wavlengths to connect to long ditance peple. People from England were able to connect with others in New Zealand.
  • International Broadcasting

    The KDKA broadcasting station was set up by The Westinghouse company. They broadcasted from East Pittsburg. This station was successull recieved and rebroadcast in Britain.
  • FM Radio

    FM Radio
    During this year the FM radio frequency was pantened by Edwin H. Armstrong. In the US, the FCC designated the FM system to transmit and recieve television sound as well.
