James Clark Maxwell showed that electromagnetic waves could be sent through air. This meant that you could send information or sound. It also meant that the radio could be made. -
Proving the waves
Heinrich Hertz demonstrated Maxwell’s theory by showing that someone could produce and detect electromagnetic radiation. This meant his idea worked and could possibly be used to make the radio. He used the waves from the radio energy to send signals from one place to another. -
Demonstration of radio waves
Nikola Tesla used Maxwell’s math to demonstrate the sending and receiving of a radio frequency energy. He proposed that this method could be used for sending and receiving information. -
First radio signal
Guglielmo Marconi sent the first radio signal in 1895. He might have not actually made it first, but he said that he did, so it counted. -
The Audion tube
In 1906, Lee De Forest made invented the Audion tube, a vacuum tube that amplified signals. It was used for longer and more powerful signals. It made smaller signals that could not be sent somewhere bigger. -
First radio station
Frank Conrad created the first radio station ever, known as KDKA. This station is still used today. This changed radio because now people could listen to a station whenever they wanted. -

In the 1920s, Jazz was the most popular music. This means it was played on the radio and at concerts. Many people listened to the radio or went to these concerts as well. -
FRC
Because too many people were making their own radio stations, The FRC was established. The FRC is a government agency that controlled who could make their own radio stations. Only specific people licensed by the government could have a radio station. -
The Golden Era
The Great Depression was from the 30s to the 40s, and people were making stations to get more money. Also, people listened to the radio for fun and it provided an escape. Many stations were made during the Golden Era. -
Competition
When TV came out in the late 30s, the radio started to become less popular. People watched the shows they were used to instead of listening to them. -
The appeal of 18 June
The appeal of 18 June was a famous speech in 1940. It was the origin or start of the French resistance against Germany and it was broadcasted by radio. Everyone heard this speech because many people had a radio. -

In the 1950s, blues music was very popular among America. It was broadcasted everywhere on the radio and was listened to constantly. People started to listen to some music on the TV. -

The 70s was a time for relaxing and calming music. It was a time that people didn't use the radio too much anymore, but still used it some. It was a very big event in music history. -
The 2000s
In the 2000s, the radio had lost most of its popularity. More people like to listen and watch the TV while sitting at home. Many people really don't use radios. -
2020
Today, most people use TV instead of radio. Most people have a radio in their car, but not many have one lying around. Radio is still useful in communicating, but there is satellite radio now.
