Tesla

Nikola Tesla had the transmission of radio frequency in his experiments. These frequencies happened often. He proposed that these frequences for telecommmunication.

Invention of Radio

Marconi was an Italian inventor. Marconi invented radio. May not have been first, but was the best at PR. He sent and recieved the first radio signal. It was not a signal dealing with audio.

Tesla's Possible Patents

Tesla has many patents for many different inventions. But, in 1897, Nikola Tesla decides to try and get two patents. The two patents were very crucial for radio.

Transatlantic

Marconi makes another "first." He conducts the first transatlantic radio communication. He was the first successful one to do so.

Patent Change

The United States patent for radio that was awarded to Tesla was taken away. It was reversed and given to Marconi for creating the radio. Some believed that his financial backer, Thomas Edison, was the reason for it.

Fleming Valve

John Ambrose Flemin creates a vacuum tube diode that helped lead to the creation of the Audion. The Audion Tube, created by Lee De Forest is a three- element tube. It is considered an important development in electronic history.

Audion Tube Created

The Audion Tube was created/borrowed in 1906. It amplifies signals to send them further then it once did. Done by Lee De Forest, but many believed the Canadian Inventor, Reginald Fessenden actually came up with the idea.

Alexanderson Alternator

Fessenden's station received the "Alexanderson Alternator." On Christmas Eve, he broadcasts a speech and music to shipboard operators as a surprise. The program was broadcasted on a 42 Kilohertz at 1 kilowatt.

Music Opprotunity

David Sarnoff offers something somewhat new. Sarnoff proposed the "radio music box" for home listening. This potential business opprotunity was ignored.

First Radio Station

This station was originally called 8XK. KDKA is the current call letters of the first radio. It was in Pennsylvania. Frank Conrad created the station.

Sarnoff's Idea

Sarnoff's second chance was in 1920. The reason why was because of the formation of the RCA (Radio Corporation of America). It was mainly controlled by General Electric. His offer of the radio music idea was taken into consideration, and they began to develop a prototype.

Commercial Changes Radio

WEAF was one radio who aired a ten minute advertisement. The advertisement was for an apartment complex. It was fifty dollars.

FRC

There was many Uncle Charlies, personal home radios, and they were interfering witht advertising. The advertisements weren't being sent out and doing anything. The FRC was established to licensing of transmitters and assigned radio station frequencies. The FRC also gave call letters. They are now known as the FCC.

Radio in the Great Depression

The Golden Age of Radio was during the 30's and 40's. People in the Great Depression used radio for comfort and entertainment. It was a form of escape for them. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was considered the first "radio president."
