The Invention of the Radio
Marconi, an Italian inventor, allegedly sent and received the first radio signal. However, it is debated that he may not have been the first. As it was common for whoever told people what they did first, typically got the credit. -
The Audion Tube
Lee De Forest created (or borrowed the idea of) an audion tube. Basically an amplifyer for sound and signals. Reginald Fessenden, a Canadian inventor, is thought to be the actual inventor, but is unrecognized in history books. -
The First Radio Station
Created in 1920, the first radio station, 8XK, was owned by Frank Conrad. The station was later renamed to KDKA. The station is still in operation in Pittsburg, PA. -
The First Commercial
To raise more money for the station, WEAF ran a 10 minute commercial, advertising an Apartment complex for $50. The idea grew and advertising remains an effective part of radio even in today. -
FCC Establishment
"Uncle Charlies" who ran stations from their own home, became too popular and started interfering with actual radio stations. In order to keep everyone in check, the FRC(now FCC) was created in 1927 -
Radio's Golden Age
In the 1930s-1940s, radio was at its peak during this era. People turned to the radio during the time of World War II and the Great Depression, to almost escape from their problems. Radio was an outlet for the whole family to enjoy. -
Television Dominates Radio
The visuals and audio of TV, began to attract more and more people. Advertisers started distancing themselves from radio because TV was getting highly popular. Radio lost money and began discontinuing radio shows. -
Radio's Revival
Radio found its savior in music because back then, music only was heard through few options. So, in order to make more money, radio stations began playing music to keep them alive. Music is now primarily what is heard on the radio.
