  • Formation of the IAASU

    The IAASU (Intercollegiate Athletics Association of the United States) was formed to regulate the conducts of college athletes and avoid exploitation.
  • IAASU to NCAA

    The IAASU changed its name to NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Assosiation).
  • Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching

    The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching created a 350-page report titled, "American College Athletics." This was written based on three years of work and many visits to college campuses. The report highlighted on many reports of abuses of rules such as overcommercialization, cheating, academic fraud, student-athlete welfare, and gambling. It also mentioned the miss placed priorities of the colleges as very little effort was put in to a proper education for the athletes.
  • First Televised College Football Game

    In 1939 Waynesburg played Fordham in a televised football game, being broadcasted on NBC. This was filmed with only one camera and one announcer, Bill Stern. It was estimated to be seen on a mere 1,000 television sets.
  • WWII's Effect

    After the end of WWII, many more people began to attend college. As the college attnedence rates began to rise, so did the popularioty in college sports.
  • Sanity-Code

    The NCAA passed the "Sanity-Code" in an effort to prevent illegal recruiting. This was trying to protect the idea of college athletes as amateurs and not employees. This was controversal due to the athletes feel of entitlement to conpensation.
  • "Death Penalty"

    The University of Kentuky was given the "Death Penalty" by the NCAA. This was their highest form of punishment. This was used against repeat offenders of major rules. This means the University of Kentukys athletic program was disbannded for a year.
  • Title IX

    Title IX stated, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." It was a part of the Educational Amendment that was passed nationwide. Title IX disallowed gender discrimination in any educational programs that receive federal assistant. This gave females many more opportunities to florish in athletics.
  • NCAA Abuse of Power

    The NCAA recieved critizism across the country from their conducts in handling the schools. Many people complained about the NCAA doing too little to regulate the schools and punish them accordingly. Yet, others complained that the schools were being punished too harshly. The NCAA created a committee to monator the punishments handed out to the schools to try to reduce that amount of critizism.
  • Female Athletics

    The first female athletics were introduced to the NCAA as they merged with the AIAW (Association for Intercolligant Athletics for Woman). This gave female athletics more oppurtunities as they were supplied with more popularity and funding under the NCAA name.
  • Proposition 62

    Proposition 62 allows a school to give a student $2,000 to pay for any school expenses that are not covered by the scholarship. This was adopted in 1997 but was not officially passed until much later. Many considered this breaking the rule of amateurism in college athletics, while many others didn't consider this enough to cover the expenses many people face. This is thought by many to be a huge success for student athletes.
