  • Engel v. Vitale

    Engel v. Vitale
    This case was based on determining if prayer would be allowed in public schools. In Engel v. Vitale the U.S. Supreme Court determined that prayer would not be allowed in public schools. Religion is a huge part families and their cultures. This case has impacted multicultural education by not allowing children in public schools to express the religions that they share within their families and their cultures.
  • Coral Way Elementary School

    Coral Way Elementary School
    At the time, there was a large amount of Cuban immigrants that migrated to Miami, this is what made them open Coral Way Elementary School. This school was the 1st bilingual and bi-cultural school in the U.S. The opening of this school had a major impact on multicultural education. It allowed children of different cultures and different backgrounds to learn more about other languages and cultures that they had yet to be exposed to.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    The Civil Rights Act is a law that was passed to end segregation against the colored. This law allowed people of color to feel more equal and to have equal rights. This had a major impact on multicultural education because it allowed children of color to no longer be segregated in schools and developed equal learning for both people of color as well as the whites. Although this Act did not end all segregation, it helped to have an impact on children not to hate.
  • Equality of Educational Opportunity Study

    Equality of Educational Opportunity Study
    Also known as the "Coleman Study" allowed for equal educational opportunity to people of color, race, national origin, and religion. This is a statistical that used tests, goals, basically surveys that helped to further the results of equal opportunity for all. This helped multicultural education because it allowed people of whatever color, religion, or race to have an equal opportunity for educational purposes.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was part of the "War On Poverty" issue by President Johnson. This act allowed low-income students and families to receive federal funding that made it possible for their children to engage in primary and secondary education. This helped multicultural education by allowing low-income families who are mostly people of color to have the federal funding to get the education they need to succeed in life.
  • Hart-Cellar Act

    Hart-Cellar Act
    The Immigration and Nationality Act began in 1965 but was put in place in 1968. This act changed a earlier set quota that was based on national origin and allowed a new immigration policy to be put in place that was based on reuniting immigrants and their families. This helped multicultural education by having more immigrants in the U.S., it allowed for more diverse classrooms.
  • Higher Education Act

    Higher Education Act
    Higher Education Act helps students receive federal aid to be able to afford higher education. This also allowed for students to receive and apply for scholarships and get approved for student loans. This helped multicultural education because it allowed everyone whites and people of color to be able to receive the higher education that they deserve.
  • Bilingual Education Act

    Bilingual Education Act
    Also know as Title VII, was made law to assure that bilingual education programs were offered to students. This program was the first of its kind and was also the first federally funded bilingual program. This helped multicultural education because it allowed children to learn different languages and expand their knowledge. This allowed children to broaden their knowledge and learn about how people of different cultures communicate through different languages.

    September 11, 2001
    The 9/11 terrorist attack took place in the heart of New York. Islamic terrorists hijacked 4 airplanes and crashed them into the world trade center as well as the Pentagon. It was a tragedy that changed history to this day. This impacted multicultural education because it will live forever in history books and people of all different cultures will learn about the horrible effects of this major tragedy that happened to the U.S.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    Although this act started in 2001, it was made law and signed by President Bush in 2002. It made education different by issuing standardized testing in schools. This changed the game and made the schools responsible for the children's academic success instead of the students themselves. This had an impact on multicultural education because it changed education for everyone. It basically assured that any child no matter what would "not be left behind" academically.
