Provided light for reading, gas for cooking, and more. However, a small percentage of people had electricity. -
Cars
Cars during this time were horseless carriages, therefore, people did not have to go through the process of attaching horses to carriages, which made transportation to stores, shopping areas, etc. easier. This led to great changes in the marketplace and consumer demand -
Assembly lines
Factory assembly lines increased production and efficiency. Additionally, it provided jobs for unemployed people. -
Instruction books
Books such as "Kitchen Practical" describes modern kitchen design, and "The Settlement Cook Book" educates people about the proper way to run a household. Certain books like these helped people throughout their daily lives. -
Chrome, metal, and glass
Many necessary objects and/or items were made with chrome, metal, and/or glass. For example lamps, decorative sculptures, ceiling lights, faucets, plates, and more. -
Bungalow
Bungalows simplified people's lives allowed them to enjoy the outdoors as part of their daily routines. Bungalows are also one story, which meant people had more rooms, whereas pioneer homes had a single room. -
Mass-produced items
Instead of taking all day to make items people can buy them in only a minute. In addition, it will save time and work. -
Air-conditioning
Before the 1930's people had to go to different rooms when they felt cold or hot, but not anymore. Air conditioning ventilates the entire living area so people do not need to go from room to room. -
Sinks and washtubs
People did not have to walk from stream, lake, or wells carrying buckets of water all the way back to their house to get water for washing dishes and/or bathing. Sinks and washtubs were life altering, saved time and work. -
Laundry equipment
In the modern times there were washing machines and perhaps a dryer. People didn't have to hang clothes and wait for them to dry and wash clothes by hand. Washers and dryers decreased the amount of time for people to do laundry. -
Ranch style homes
Ranch style home were introduced in the 1950's. It has 2 stories and a basement. This gave people more room for storage, furniture, etc. -
Sole television
Sole television provided more stations for people to watch and enjoy that in Pre-modern times. -
Sinks with hot and cold water
In the 1950's people can take a hot shower and wash dishes with hot water. Whereas in pre-modern times the sinks provided only cold water. -
Indoor plumbing
Most houses have indoor plumbing than in the Pre-modern times. Before the modern times, only the rich and/or city dwellers had indoor plumbing. -

First Swanson TV Dinner
People didn't have to buy separate products to cook meals. With TV dinners, people can easily have dinner ready in a small amount of time. In addition TV dinners need a lot of dishes. -
Shopping Centers
Before modern times, people would have food, décor, and more delivered to them from stores. Around 1954 shopping centers began appearing and home delivery decreased. In addition, people didn't have to drive to different stores to buy necessities because shopping centers had a variety of items. -
Colored televisions
People get the opportunity to enjoy watching television in color than they did in pre-modern times, which were black and white. -
Vogue
Vogue was introduced around 1960's, which was during the civil rights movement. It came in the form of fondue pots, shag rugs, conversation pits, and barbecue pits. In addition, it brought a new style of decoration. -
Computer technology to electronics and appliances
Home computers were originally invented in 1970's, however the interest in buying them did not increase until the 1990's because of home design. -
Energy-and water saving appliances
Appliances such as telephones, washers and dryers, and more helped reduce utility bills. In addition, they also saved time and work. -
Multiple necessities
Not only were there more beds, rooms, and bathrooms, there were also more dishwashers, sinks, dryers, washers, ovens, stoves, and more. This allowed people to do multiple things at the same time. -
Laptops
Laptops allowed people to move from one area to another and work instead of sitting in one place. Therefore laptops did not have wires connected to walls and they were lighter than computers in the past. -
Household tools
Household tools made it easier and faster to get things done and accomplished throughout the day. People used tools such as the microwave oven, stove, refrigerator, etc. -

Garages
Garages were improved at this time. There were 2 or 3 instead of one. In addition this provided more parking areas for friends and/or family members when they visit. -
Kitchen size
Kitchens increased in size make it easier for people to walk and cook in the kitchen freely. The increased size provides them more space. -
Average New American Home
Homes in the early 21st century were larger, which meant more area for storing, people, furniture, etc. that they were in Pre-modern and modern times. This also allowed people to have additional family members and/or friends over to socialize. -
Living space
Before post modern times families with 2 children only had 1 bed, 1 bedroom, and 1 bathroom, therefore they had to share. Now each child, if there are 2 or 3, got their own bed and bedroom and shared two bathrooms. This allowed them more space and less time to wait on each other. -
Family room
Family rooms allowed family members to interact with each other while cooking, eating, or watching tv. They were huge rooms that included the kitchen, dining areas and living rooms. -
Home design
Home design in 2011 was greener and the desire for newness decreased. This allowed people to spend less money on utilities and same money, which changed the needs of families and their pocketbooks..
