    Hernando Del Soto Starts to Explore Georgia
    When Hernando Del Soto came to North America, he landed in Florida and then marched north. Within his goup he had over 600 men, 200 horses, and dogs and mules. The one thing Del Soto wanted was gold. While he searched for gold, he killed thousands of Natives and killed many others from disease that he brought with him. Although he killed many Natives, his mission was still a failure. No gold was found, and he died along the way. Neverless, he stil made a huge impact among the Native Culture.

    Spanish Missions Were Established Along the Barrier Islands
    The first Spanish Mission in Georgai was built in 1566 and was called Santa Catalina, on St. Caherines Island. For the rest of the 1500s, Spain's missions had a great impact on control of the New World. Thanks to the missions, Spain became rich and powerful.
  • Jamestown, Virginia is Established

    Jamestown, Virginia is Established
    As soon as the town was created, it had troubles. The year was too late to plant crops and malaria swept through the village due to it being next to a swamp. At the end of one year, only 38 settlers were alive. But later, when the settlers found out that tobacco grew well in the land, the colony flouished and many others came. Many indentured sevants worked on the cultivation of tobacco.
  • Georgia's Charter is Written

    Oglethorpe gets the King to sign the Georgia Charter, officially making it a colony.

    Ogelthorpe leaves Georgia to return to England.Never comes back again.

    French and Indian War

    War between French and British that ended with British victory. Both sides had alied Native americans, and the British had a better navy, and the French had a better Army. Ended in 1763 by the Treaty of Paris.

  • The Georgia Gazett is the first newspaper in the state

  • Stamp Act

    It was a tax by Britian to the colonists on all newspapers and legal documents, and the colonists were not happy. They protested and wanted liberty. Especially because they had to representation in creating this tax.
  • Townshend Acts

    Parliament taxed colonists on glass, lead, paints, paper and tea imported into the colonies. The act was repealed in 1770, except on tea.
  • Boston Massacre

    5 patriots were killed and 6 others were injuered by Brtitish soldiers while protesting. The colonists were thowing rocks and threatening the British soldiers. The soldiers were trialed.

  • Declaration of Independence

    When the 13 colonies stated that they were no longer a part of the British Empire and were now free at the Continental Congress.
  • Articles of Confederation

    Started at the first continental congress and was finished 5 years later. It was the first consittution of the United States and did not work.

    any changes had to be made unaimously
    no power to collect taxes
    no pwer to raise national army
    no pwer to make single currency
    difficult to change laws
  • Battle of Kettle Creek

    One of the first major battles that georgia won. They beat 800 British troops and got lots of supplies in return. Battle led by Elijah Clarke.
  • Siege of Savannah

    French and American troops siege savannah and wait for a month outside of the town. Even thought the battle lasted only 45 minutes, the French and American troops got destroyed. Savannah remained as British territory for the next 3 1/2 years.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Last battle of the Revolutionary War. Fought between the British, and the Americans and the French. Washington and Cornwallis were the generals. Yorktown, Virginia.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Ended the American Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the United States of America.
  • Shay's rebellion

    was an armed uprising that took place in Massachusetts by veteran Daniel Shay. Massachusett's people were upset with their government.
  • Ratification of the US Constitution

    The constituional convention met in philadelphia to talk about the Articles of Confederation. They made a new constitution that solved the problems of the Articles.
  • Ratification of the Constitution

    Delegates of the Continental Congress agree with the Constitution. Delaware was the first to ratify, and became the first state.
  • Invention of the cotton gin

    Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin which causes the south to prosper and have more slaves. This invention may have caused the Civil War.
  • Yazoo Land Fraud

    Four companies bribed some of the members of the Georgia Assembly to create a bill that allowed them to sell land west of Georgia's border. This land was originally reserved by the federal government. When they found out, there was lots of trouble because the people that bought the land didn't want to move out. It cost the federal government over 4 million dollars to clean up the mess.

    When Missouri wanted to become a slave state, Congress made Maine a free state to keep the balance of powers in the Congress.
  • Dahlonega Gold Rush

    It was the second significant gold rush in the U.S. and it brought many people to the state, largely increasing the state poplulation.
  • Indian Removal Act

    President Andrew Jackson created an act that allowed him to neotiate with the natives and give them land north of the Mississippi in return for their homelands.
  • Nullification Crisis

    South Carolina didn't like the tarrifs, so they didn't follow the federal law. When President Jackson said that he was going to use the military against them, they backed down, and made a compromise that lowered the tarrifs, but South Carolina wasn't still completely pleased.
  • Compromise of 1850

    It made the state of California a free state, and ended the slave trade in Washington, D.C.,made it easier for southerners to recover fugitive slaves.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    An act that said that anyone in the Kansas Nebraska region was allowed to decide for themselves whether or not they wanted slavery.
  • Dred Scott Case

    A US supreme court case where a slave named dred scott was not entitled to his freedom, even though he was in a free state. they said the missouri compromise was unconstitutional.
  • Election of 1860

    The presidential election after Jackson's, one of the causes of the Civil War. president abraham lincoln won the election, but he had no support from the south.
