Zoopraxiscope
The zoopraxiscope is an early device for displaying motion pictures. It iwas created by Eadweard Muybridge in 1879, and maybe considered as the first movie projector. The zoopraiscope projected images through rotating glass disks in rapid succession. -
Zoetrope
The zoetrope was invented in 1834 by William Horner, who orginall called it a Daedalum. It was based on Plateau's phenakistoscope, but was more convenient since i didn't require a viewing mirror. -
Vaudevilles
The vaudevilles are small theaters that played short dramatic skits, comedy routines, and dance and song numbers. To fill in the time between the different acts the vaudevilles started featuring short films to help entertain the audience. -
Lumiere Brothers & The Cinetographe
The Lumiere brothers did exactly what Edison didn't want , they devised a projector that could show motion pictures on a screen. They started showing these ictures at a Paris cafe to make it known. These films were usually 30-60 seconds long. -
Kinetoscope Parlor
A Kinetoscope Parlor helped create on illusion of movement from still images or drawings. These illusions were made for anyone who would pay money to watch, but only one person could watch at a time. Thomas Edison was the inventor of the Kinetoscope Parlor and he thought that it would bring in more money because only one person could watch at a time. -
How It Began
The film industry got started with a bet on a horse. A guy named Mibridge bet $25,000 on the fact that a horse has all 4 hooves off the ground when at full gallop. He set up cameras to take pictures of the horse running, and when he looked at the pictures he saw a motion picture showed though pictures. -
The Great Train Robbery
The Great Train Robbery was the very first narrative film. It included a real story line and invovled camera positions and distances. The film lasted 12 minutes, which amazd everyone that was used to the short 30-60 second films. This film was written , produced, and directed by Edwin Porter. -
Nickeodeons
The Nickelodeons were the first type of indoor place where auditions could watch short films. These places were advertised in storefront to gain people. The admission to these films were a nickel, which is where the name came from. -
MPPC
Thomas Edison founded the MPPC, or the Motion Picture Patent Company for multiple reasons. One reason was because they wanted to own everything you would need to make a film, from film stock to projectors. When independent studios tried to compete with the MPPC they didn't esceed because Edison would come and break their equipment. -
Hollywood
The move from NYC to Hollywood was for two main reasons. One was to get away from the MPPC so independent studios could produce films. the decond reason was because of the weather, -
Charlie Chaplin
Chaplin was the first 20th century superstar so to say. He was a comedic genius that played characters in movies about social equality and politic leaders. He ended up making a million dollars in 1917 which was alot of money for an actor back then. -
American Sweetheart
Mary Pickford, or the American Sweetheart, was a Canadian- American motion picture actress. She was one of the top two actors in the 20th century alongside Charlie Chaplin. She did a bunch of things to help develo the film industry.
