It started with a $25,000 bet with people arguing that a galloping horse had all four feet off of the ground at the same time, other people said that is was impossible. -

Cinematograph
In 1895 they came out with a 30-60 second film (Cinematographe) to watch moving images and to watch it you had to pay then stand behind this object.Then put one eye on the object then crank it up. The disadvantage was that it was only for one person because Edison wanted more money. But Thomas Edison didn't want to do it so the Lumiere brothers did. -

Edison liked the fact that only one person at a time could see the images. Edison's Company had devised the peephole kinetoscope and he was making a bit of money selling these devices. -
Nickelodeons
In the 1900's Vaudeville expanded into nickelodeon. Vaudeville was quite popular and named the 30-60 sec film Nickelodeon because you have to pay a nickel to get in. Nickelodeons was a small store-front theaters that showed films. -
The Great Train Robbery
In 1903 Thomas Edison Porter created a film called The Great Train Robbery. It was the first U.S. Narrative film. The film had different camera positions, Different narrator sequences, and it was a real story. The film was also 12 minutes which was long for them because usually the film is 30-60 seconds long. -

Why people film in Los Angles
Most people film in LA because it never rains and because it's away from MPPC and close to Mexico in case they have to run away. -
MPPC
The MPPC ( Motion Picture Patent Company) was a group of different countries that formed a trust.They were in New York and MPPC people raided the independent studios that attempted to make films. Equipment was smashed and employees were threatened. -
New York
They didn't film in new York because it was cloudy and dark there. They always had to change the recording do they moved to LA. -
The early Days
In LA Thomas Edison and MPPC (The Motion Picture Patent Company) they didn't want to show actors name because they thought that they would get more money. But later on two stars Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin got there names on the ground. -
Charlie Chaplin
The first 20th Century superstar was Charlie Chaplin. He was a silent comedy. He started make $150 an week to making more than a million a year.
