The Lumiere Brothers
Invented the projector. Started to produce films that multiple people can see. These films included features that lasted from 30-60seconds. -
Nickelodeons
These were very popular during Lumieres' time. They started intoducing short films between skits. -
The Great Train Robbery
An employee of Edison's, Edwin Porter, made a short film. But, for that time, that was insanely long. Introduced camera angles and narrative sequences. -
Motion Picture Patents Company
The MMPC tried to monopoly the film industry. The MMPC was led by Thomas Edison. Any independent industry was destroyed, causing them to flee to the west. -
Charlie Chaplin
Considered one of the most famous actors of the time. Worked on many movies. Many of those movies consisting of plots dealing with good and evil. -
World War I
The film industry was used to help promote the war. They filmed shots of bodies and skits to show the people what the war was like. This helped bring journalism into the picture of film. -
Sound In Video
Sound was introduced in video. One of the earliest films that contained sound was titled The Jazz Singer. -
Non-American Cinema
Hollywood started to decline, because many films were now being filmed in other countries. Many films like Mary Poppins and
the Sound of Music were made in this time. -
The New Hollywood
Hollywood decided to change it up a bit. In order to grab people's attention, they started including sexual content and gore. This change greatly helped the dramatic elements that they were craving. -
VCRs
The home VCR gave the film industry great concern. They tried to take legal action against it but it didn't work out. Thy instead started to treat it as "second venue"
