The First Camera
The first camera was partially built in 1816 by Nicéphore Niépce. He built the first Kodak. The Kodak was a a box camera that had to be sent back to Kodak themselves to develop the photos. -
The Horse Race
Eadweard Muybridge took 16 photos of a horse galloping. This was the first example of a motion picture. It was pictures that moved so fast it looked like a video. -
The Lumiere Brothers
The Lumiere Brothers created a projector that could show motion pictures. They started showing them in cafes for money. They were very short. -
The first Movie
Edwin Porter created the first movie. It was the first movie to have an actual narrative. It was 12 minutes long which was long for back then. -
Vaudeville/Nickelodeon
Vaudeville was a small theatre that showed short skits. In between them they would show a short movie. The movies were called nickelodeons because they only cost a nickel. -
Thomas Edison & The MPPC
Thomas Edit created the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC). Their plan was to own all motion pictures. They did all of this so that they could get tons of money. -
The West Coast
In order to escape MPPC small studios fled to the west coast. There they were far way from MPPC and the weather was nicer. They were now in Hollywoodland. -
Talkies
Talkies were the first motion pictures to have sound! Everyone thought that they would fail. To everyones' surprise they were a massive hit. -
Silent Films are History
By 1940 the silent films were nothing but history. Everyone enjoyed the talkies more than silent productions. Silent films stoped getting made and nothing but talkies were left. -
Color!
In 1939 The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind came out. These were the first films to have color. With the use of technicolor, color became a stable thing in film. -
Hollywood
Hollywood continued to grow and grow. The first blockbuster movie "Jaws" came out in 1975. This kicked off the start of our classic movies. -
CGI
In order to make more movies with unrealistic ideas people created CGI. This allowed them to create things that weren't really there. This helped a lot of movies grow big like Star Wars. -
Digital
Movies were starting to turn from film to digital. Movies were able to be longer because it took up less space. Film also made to much noise so that's another reason they switched.
