The Bet
Two men, watching a horse race suddenly made a bet. They were both rich so they betted a good sum of money on if a horse at one point in time had all 4 hooves in the hair instead of on the ground. Standford's founder hired a photographer to do the job for him and prove that it did. So he proved it and it ultimately developed the idea of movies. -
Vaudevilles Created
Vaudevilles were short films you could see in theaters just until the next film started or till it got booed. These only costed a nickel to see as such they were called nickelodeons. Also, this is how the TV channel nickelodeon got their name. -
The Great Train Robbery
The great train robbery was known as the first epic film and introduced a new style to film making. It was the first narrative created which had an entire storyline. This storyline lasted 12 minutes and was directed by Edwin Porter, an employee of Thomas Edison. This movie captured scenes at different angles and was a leap in film making history. -
MPPC
This year marked the beginning of a dominant era for the MPPC in the film industry. The MPPC was located in New York and was created by Thomas Eddison. Ultimately, Eddison wanted all of the money. He was a greedy man as he has most of all the equipment and people had to pay is company to use it. They didn't like independent studios so they were raided so they really ran this industry at the time. -
Sound in Film
The Jazz Singer was the very first movie to have sound in it. This movie was the leading brand in the sound industry and face of many sound companies. Before then there were no sound in nickelodeons or films. -
The Greatest Year in Film
This year was regarded as the greatest year in film for lots of reasons. Not only were the films widely enjoyed, 10 of them were nominated for academy awards. These movies included The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Adventures of Sherlock Homes, etc. -
Wartime
This was a period of time in which film was influenced by World War 2. Films were created to rise up spirit and patriotism in the US. Not only were these films popular among the US citizens, it was also a hit for the British. Many of these movies won awards such as: Casablanca and Fantasia. -
Television Invention
This was a period in time to where theater attendance dramatically dropped. The television was now looked to as a "home theater" so people didn't feel the need to go to a theater. This impacted the film business greatly as many theaters shut down as a result of this. -
The New Wave
This is a period in time in which the French experimented with different film techniques. Something out of the box they experimented with was the principle that "sex sells" as the started implementing that in their movies. Two films that are examples of this experiment are: Breathless and Purple Moon. -
IMAX Theater System
IMAX was a theatrical system which explored an entirely different experience in the way we view films. The iMAX was first premiered in Osaka, Japan in 1971 and has been used and has been popular ever since. There is an IMAX theater in Dallas, Texas at a museum. -
Action Films
This was the year where the first film that sparked action films besides the Great Train Robbery was created. It was called "2 Champions of Shaolin". Action films weren't officially or really a thing until the 1980s when it sparked a dramatic increase. -
CGI
CGI or computer generated imagery, is basically a computer making images, art or visuals for a film. There was a dramatic rise in CGI in the 1990s as film companies started using it more. One movie that has CGI incorporated is "Jurassic Park" -
Film to Digital Transition
In the early 2000s, this is when digital film started becoming a thing. The first digital film in the 2000s was Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones in 2002. It didn't take long before film was started to become used sparingly as by the 2010s it became the new normal.
