First successful photographs of motion
In 19878, a British photographer named Eadweard Muybridge took the first successful photographs of motion, showing how people and animals move. -
Kinetoscope
In 1889, Thomas Edison and W.K. Dickson invented the Kinetscope, a peep-show device in which film is moved past a light. -
The invention of the first motion-picture cameras
In the 1890's the first motion-picture cameras were invented. This then caused the establishment of the first film production companies and cinemas. The films made at this current time were under a minute long and had no sound. -
Projecting an image
Two French brothers patent a combination movie camera and projector, capable of projecting an image that can be seen by many people. The brothers were the first to present projected, moving, photographic, pictures to a paying audience of more that one person. -
The first rotating camera was built
In 1897, the first rotating camera was built for taking panning shots. -
Film studios built
In 1897 the first film studios were built. Special effects were soon introduced. Film started to begin involving action moving from one sequence into another. -
Animation
In 1899, animation was first used in movies. -
Close up shots
In 1900, the close up shot was introduced. -
First feature length multi-reel film
In 1906 an Australian production was the first feature length multi-reel film. -
First animated cartoon
In 1906, the first animated cartoon was produced -
Actors recieved screen credit
In 1910, actors began to receive screen credit for their roles. This got actors more well known and started producing 'film stars' -
American films had largest share of the film market
American films had the largest share of the market in all European countries except France -
New techniques
Around this time new film techniques were introduced such as the use of artificial lighting, fire effects and Low-key lighting for enhanced atmosphere during sinister scenes. -
Film genres
As films grew longer, more complex stories came from novels or plays into a form that could be contained on one reel. Genres began to be used as categories, the most popular was comedy and drama, but these categories were further subdivided. -
World war transitional period
During the World War, the film industry changed very much. Films changed from short one-reel programmes to feature films and enues became larger and began charging higher prices.
New techniques continued to be made such as an accurate and smooth transition from one shot to another. -

Film had sound
In 1927 films had started to be produced with soound. -
First synchronized dialoge film
in 1927, Warners released 'The Jazz Singer', the first synchronized dialogue (and singing) in a feature film -
First drive in theater
The first drive-in movie theater opens in New Jersey, USA. -
First full length animated feature
in 1937, the first full length animanted feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by Walt Disney, is released. -
Increase in watching films at home
In the 1980s, more people began watching films at home on their VCRs. IThe film studios orginally tried legal action to ban home ownership of VCRs as a violation of copyright, which proved unsuccessful. The sale and rental of films on home video became a second venue for exhibition of films, and an additional source of revenue for the film industries. -
The first feature length computer-animated film was prduced
in 1995, the first feature length computer-animated feature, Toy Story, was produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Disney.
