In 1891 Thomas Edison invented the Kinetoscope. It was a device for showing movies with sound. Initially Edison did not want to use it because he thought people wouldn't be interested in sound, but they were there for the acting. -
Sherlock Holmes
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's created Detective Sherlock Holmes in 1900. Sherlock Holmes is the first recorded detective on film. Viewing of the movie, Sherlock Holmes Baffled (1900), was for one-person Mutoscope. -
Paramount Pictures
Paramount Pictures started in Los Angeles in 1914. During its first year it released the films of Jesse Lasky and Adolph Zukor's Famous Players Film Company. Paramount Pictures have made many great movies over the years such as the Mission Impossible and Terminator series. -
First 3-D Movie
Movies of the Future was the first 3-D showing of a movie. It was created in 1922 and directed by William Van Doren Kelley. The showing was located at the Rivoli Theater in New York City. -
Production Code
In 1930, the public pressured the film industry to clearly outline what was acceptable in films. The Catholic Church was the biggest source of pressure. This lead to the creation of the Motion Picture Production Code. -
Superman
Superman debuted in film in 1941. He appeared in an animated series of seventeen cartoons. The first ever Superman film was also known as The Mad Scientist. -
The Rise of Televison
In the early 1950s theater attendance drastically declined. This was a result of the rise of television. To counteract this Hollywood began to incorporate color in their films and they also introduced wide-screen films. -
IMAX
In 1971 the first IMAX movie theatre the Cinesphere was constructed. It was located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This allowed the audience to view films on much bigger screens. -
Star Wars
In 1977 the first Star Wars Movie was created. It was created and directed by George Lucas. This film will always be remembered for its great action scenes and special effects. -
Home Alone
The first Home Alone movie came out in 1990. It was filmed in Illinois and New York City. It remains a classic today and is shown a lot during Christmas time. -
The Grinch
In 2000, Dr Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas debuted. Its opening weekend became the highest debut for a Christmas- themed film. -
U.S. Box office
US cinema made over $11 billion in domestic box- office revenue. That put it in first place. Second and third place was Japan and India respectively.
