How it begun
It started with a bet when some people where arguing wether or not horses had all four feet of the ground at once. They made an experient where they took multiple images in rapid succesion, When they where flipped through they gave the illusion of movement. -
The Lumiere brothers
Eddison initialy did not want to make a projector for fear of not making as much money. The lumiere brothers invented a projector which alowed for much bigger audience.They created series of short films for these theatres. -
Illusion of movement
After it was discovered that multiple images could be manipulated to create the illusion of movemet. Kinetoscopes where invented which allowed people to watch moving images at a small fee. These only allowed for an audience of one -
Origin of Nickleodeon
Vaudevilles where very popular in these times and these theatres decided to be ahead of the game and one-up their competition by filling up time in between shows with these short films. Vaudevilles where open theatres that featured films accompanied by one or two acts. -
The first narative movie
This was the first actual movie with a storyline and it was made by and employee of thomas edison, Edwin Porter. It was named the Great Train Robbery and was 12 minutes long which at the time, categorized it as an Epic. -
Success of nickelodeon
After a few years of development nickelodeon theatres had begun to attract up to 26 Millions viewers per week and eddison saw profit in this. He created a monopoly which brought in a lot of money and destroyed any independent filming companies. -
Escape from Edison
Since edison had a monopoly over the film imdustry many independant film companies decided to move far away from him, all the way to california. Another reason for moving there, was because there was better lighting in California, it was always sunny. Plus if Edison attempted to interfere they would retreat to mexico. -
Forgetting Edison
Eddison never included the names of the actors in order for them not to become superstars so they wouldnt need a bigger salary. Other companies went the other way and so the superstars like Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin where born.
