    In the 1960's through the ealy years of the 1970's, there were major natural disasters in the U.S. and it bagan over 100 agencies that dealt with disaster management and mitigation.
  • FEMA Began

    FEMA Began
    The government has been makeing legislations and agencies to deal with natural disasters. Over 100 agencies were created and in 1979 Jimmy Carter merged all the agencies to form the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
  • Louis O. Giuffrida

    Louis O. Giuffrida
    Giuffrida developed much of FEMA's civil defense programs and he was eventually forced out of the agency in 1985 after it was revealed that he embezzled government money to build a private residence at FEMA's Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
  • Hurricane Hugo

    Hurricane Hugo
    Hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina in 1989, and caused over $9 billion in damages and 61 casualties. FEMA was criticised for slow response to the situation, and it would become a trend in FEMA's response to natural disasters.

    9/11
    The terrorists attacks of 9/11 began coordinated efforts with the Office of Homeland Security. Also FEMA's Office of National Preparedness were trained and equipped to deal with weapons of mass destruction.

    Hurricane Katrina
    Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. History. It caused 1,836 deaths and an estimated $81 billion in damages. FEMA recieved much criticism for not being prepared during and after the hurricane.
  • Arkansas Tornadoes of 2007

    Arkansas Tornadoes of 2007
    The people of Dumas, Arkansas criticized FEMA for their response after the tornadoes hit. They reported that FEMA did not send enough trailers for the people that did not have a place to stay after the damages of the storms; many of people were left homeless.
