The stock market crashed, causing the great depression. During this time, federal feeding, housing and work programs were established and home economists became more necessary. -
US joined WWII
War production pulled America out of the great depression. Women took up the jobs of men during this time, and African Americans gained more job opportunities, as well. As a result of resource shortage, new fashion inventions were introduced and people learned to eat out of their own gardens. Home economists educated citizens based on scientific research. -
Soldiers returned home from the war
Since soldiers were returning, many citizens had to give back jobs to veterans. This is the start of the baby boom, as couples started having babies right away. Women and African American citizens did not want t accept the lowering of their class. Home economics changed with the loss of need for military resources; fashion, food parenting and entertainment all changed. -
Brown vs. the Board of Education
The supreme court decided that "separate did not make equal" and started integrating schools around the US. Despite this, black home economists were not given the same opportunities as their white counterparts. -
Name change
The American Home Economics Association changed its name to American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCA). -
Student organization name change
The organization Future Homemakers of America changed its name to Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). -
