First Free school in Virginia opened.

1635

Called the Syms School it was not the first attempt, in 1619-1620 by the London company they tried to create a school to teach Indian children about Christianity

The University of Georgia becomes America's first state chartered university.

1785

This became the first birthplace of public higher education.

James Pillans invents the modern blackboard.

1801

James Pillans also created colored chalk for the blackboard.

Boston English High School one of the first public schools in the US opens

1821

This school opened with 101 male students, it helped them become prepared to go to Harvard.

The University of Iowa is the first state university "to admit men and women on a equal basis"

1855

This university helped Mary B. Hickey Wilkinson become the first women with a degree in law.

Boston creates the first public day school for the deaf

1869

All states have laws providing funds for transporting kids to school

1919

This helped kids without a way to school to still be able to get to school and get the education they need.
