    Education went from just religious learning or for religious purposes but for political reasons as well. Wanted the masses to be able to read the bible themselves. This is important because it was a revolutionary idea that people learn information and discover or make conclusions or interpretations themselves.
  • The Massachusetts law.

    The Massachusetts law.
    It became law that children’s education should be provided to them and if not by their parents or master they were to find them a different one. This almost propelled education into being a right, it was law. This led to other establishments of grammar school to be formed.
  • New England Primer

    New England Primer
    The new england primer. Use of textbooks and ways of learning. Taught the alphabet, roman numerals, ten commandments , The Lord’s Prayer, and poems.
  • Benjamin Franklin

    Benjamin Franklin
    Very influential to John Locke who was an advocate for practical education. Benjamin Franklin thought students should be taught what was practical as well. He started an Academy which he considered to be a failure but it was essential to this kind of thinking and education.
  • Roberts vs. Boston

    Roberts vs. Boston
    Benjamin Roberts trying to enroll Sarah into schools, being denied because of her race. This led to Benjamin sueing Boston for racial discrimination but the court ruled in Boston’s favor. This event led to the separate but equal act. This was an important moment where someone was willing to stand up for what was right.

    He believed we should steer from European ideas to American ones. He believed creating a distinct language would be the way to do that. So the English Spelling Book sold millions of copies and is responsible for our language today. He also was an advocate for free public schools. He was also an advocate for Female education .

    Education should be tailored to each individual child’s needs. The importance of love and emotion in the learning process, starting to see learning in more than one way. Education was a way to reach each individual's maximum potential.
  • Child Study Movement

    Research and understanding the importance of a child’s emotional and psychological development. This led to laying a foundation for educational psychology and paving the way for Piaget and other theorists.
  • Fredreich Foebel

    Fredreich Foebel
    Established the first kindergarten. Began early childhood education. Believed it was like a mini society were children should be free to learn through activity and creatively. I agree with these beliefs and feel it was important in history because it now became something that happened early on. And education was not so lecture based but discovery, fun and learning.
  • Horace Mann

    Horace Mann
    The “Father of American Education” He led the campaign to make schools a state system and was the first Secretary of Education. He campaigned and worked really hard to raise support for public education. He played an important role in training and educating teachers. He declared education was the right of every child.
  • John Dewey

    John Dewey
    developed his own laboratory school at the University of Chicago. He Provided a means for progressive type of education. He believed in a child centered curriculum and believes it should be learned through experience. He believed in looking at all aspects of what makes a child a child. He also wrote many articles and books that influenced and changed the way education was thought of and taught. He believed learning was a lifelong pursuit and saw it more holistically.

    freedom to develop naturally, interest provides the motivation for all work, the teacher as guide in the learning process, the scientific study of pupil development, greater attention to everything that affects the child's physical development, cooperation between the school and home in meeting the natural interests and activities of the child, and the progressive school should be a leader in educational movements.It also conducted important studies to show the effects of progressive education.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression
    As this tragic event was happening there were more and more cuts and effects of school. CLass sizes were too large and teachers too few as they weren’t able to be paid. The government couldn’t help or fund these schools but after the great depression these young people and workers had no skills. To have this lack of education highlighted the real importance for education.
  • Brown vs. The Board of Education

    Brown vs. The Board of Education
    -Segregation had no place in education. This was an important moment in civil rights and in education. America and individuals still had a long way to go but this was an important step.
