First McGuffy Reader is published
The McGuffey Readers contained interesting stories that taught religious, moral, and ethical principles that were popular at the time. These were used to teach reading. One of the first textbooks in America that got more challenging as the volumes went on (What are the Mcguffey Readers?). -
Horace Mann becomes Secretary of the New Massachusetts Board of Education
Horace Mann often referred to as the "Father of the Public School", fought to educate poor and wealthy students in his common schools (Sass, 2020). -
First Normal School Opens
Normal Schools were state-funded schools specifically for educating teachers (Sass,2020). -
First Attendence Law Passed
Massachusetts was the first state to require children to attend school (Sass,2020). -
National Teacher Association founded

Booker T. Washington becomes Principal of Normal School in Tuskeegee, Alabama
This was the first Normal school for African Americans. The school was started on an abandoned plantation (Sass, 2020) ("Tuskegee Institute", 2005). -
Association of American Universities founded
This was founded to raise standards and bring U.S. University to the same level as those in Europe (Sass, 2020)
