  • American Colonial Period

    American Colonial Period
    • In 1642 Massachusets made a law requiring each town to establish a school -There was no president during this time period
    • Teachers were unders religious leaders and were mostly controled
    • The Quakers established the first school that welcomed everybody regardless of their race and religion
    • Their school curriculum was reading, writing, simple math, and religion
  • American Early National Period

    American Early National Period
    • New Ideas of teaching were introduced
    • Thomas Jefferson was president during this time period
    • The roles of teachers were strict because they were main leaders
    • New nation's freedom and liberties for everyone
    • Benjamin Franklin opened the first public library
    - Their curriculum was based of reading, writing, math, and citizenship
  • American Common School Period

    American Common School  Period
    • The Morril Act was passed during this time period
    • Horace Mann was president
    • Teachers would teach every grade and their pay was low
    • Many schools were established
    • Horace Mann was very important because he worked to establish free public education
    • Their curriculum was christian principles and citizenship along with English history
  • American Progressive Period

    American Progressive Period
    • By 1855 the first law statinng curriculum requirements was passed
    • Theodore Roosevelt was president
    • Teachers were considered professionals
    • By the close of Civil War, education was respected
    • John Dewey wrote books for children to understand more and Maria Montessori helped special need kids
    • Their curriculum was based of their religion
