First Public School was opened in America
The first public school was opened in the 17th century in Boston Massachusetts. It was called The Boston Latin School, it was ran by a Puritan settler. This was a boys only secondary school with the purpose of preparing the boys for university.

Harvard was founded in 1636, they claim that they are "the oldest institution of higher education in the United States."

First Academy for Women is Opened
John Poor opens the first academy for women in Philadelphia. It was known as the "Young Ladies Academy." It was located on Cherry Street a half a mile away from where the Constitution written.

Brown vs. The Board of Education
The U.S. courts ruled that in the case of public education "separate but equal" had no place. It was stated that the separate facilities were inherently unequal.

Title IX was Passed
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Elementary and Secondary School Act
The Elementary and Secondary School Act was put forth by President Lyndon B. Johnson. It was part if his attack on the "War on Poverty." This act brought education to the forefront and helped create equal access to quality education.

The Education for all Handicapped Children Act is Passed
Up until 1975 there were very few opportunities for disabled students. This act required all schools receiving federal funding to provide handicapped children equal access to education and mandated that they be placed in the least restrictive educational environment possible.
