  • Colonial Period

    Colonial Period
    Schools in this time period were private, cost money, and were made so that only the privileged were able to be educated. These schools were based on religion and taught using a horn book to teach the alphabet and scriptures.

  • Common Schools

    Common Schools are public schools where most students have a limited education and the teachers aren't qualified. The schools are based on Protestantism and each school is different in significant ways.
  • Horace Mann

    Horace Mann promoted public schooling by actively going to schools and noticing what needs to be fixed. He supports using taxes to pay for public schooling and standardized tests.
  • Growth of Education After the Civil War

    After the Civil War schools were booming, there was increased enrollment and encouragement for women to become teachers. Education was now available for everyone and African Americans were able to become literate.
  • Progressive Reform Movement

    Progressive Reform Movement
    This movement protested child labor and encouraged required schooling. It also encourage teaching to fit the whole child and to prepare the child for life.
    This is important because understanding what works and what doesn't will help teachers figure out the best ways to teach. I think this movement encourages teaching life skills which I know to be important. It also showed how progressing can make a huge difference.
  • Population growth and immigration

    In the 19th century, immigrants flooded the United States causing a protest against Protestantism and separating religion from state. This time period also caused an English only schools which decreased cultural differences.
  • The Gary Plan

    This plan was created to reform the school system to make it more active and allow space to move. It also was created to teach a variety of skills for the future.
  • Brown vs. the Board of Education

    The court case ruled in favor of Brown, meaning segregation was no longer constitutional. Even though the court ruled in favor, the government had to enforce the rule by cutting off funds.
  • Sputnik and NDEA

    Sputnik and NDEA
    After Sputnik was created, schools put more pressure into students learning math and science. They focused the curriculum more on specific aspects instead of the things they used to focus on.
    This event is important because it shows how cultural events shape schools. I learned why math and science are pushed so much in our day. This helps us know where demand is for work in the community.

  • Impact of the Civil Rights Movement

    After the civil rights movement, schools were required to integrate their schools. The government helped integrate school by threatening to cut funding.

    The Impact of War on Poverty made it so all children could have a chance to receive an education and be successful. This movement also help meet the children physical and emotional needs.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    This Act made it so everyone has equal access to education, meaning students can choose a school that they want to go to. It also made it so there's a shorter achievement gap.
    This act is important because it allows everyone to make an active choice in their education. This act allows them to chose where they want to learn.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Act
    This act made it so those with disabilities can receive help in the least restrictive environment for them. Also those with disabilities will be able to learn social skills and how to learn in a regular classroom.
    This is important because disabilities bring things into the classroom that regular students don't. Its important for those with disability to get the help they need.

  • A Nation at Risk Report

    This is a report that showed that education decreased and that the students weren't learning what they should've been. The effects of this report were that standardized testing becomes important and that school hours have increased.
  • Growth of Standardized Testing

    Teachers use a market place model to motivate their students to develop academically. This model make it so that the students will compete to get better test scores.
